Imperial County is a county located in the Imperial Valley, in the far southeast of the U.S. state of California, and borders both Arizona and Mexico.
The county is the youngest and poorest of all of California's counties.

Strike and alignment of the Imperial fault are nearly concordant with traces of the San Jacinto fault northwest of the Salton Sea.
Instrumental records throughout the region indicate that the occurrence of earthquakes is confined to the upper 8 km of the crust presumably because of the high geothermal gradient in the Salton Trough and the associated plastic behavior of crustal rocks at greater depths.
The Imperial County Service Building in El Centro is the SMIP station that recorded the accelerogram (figure 2) of ground motion and structural response showing times of the most extensive damage and subsequent partial collapse.

Imperial Valley is a large, flat crop growing area in the very south of California, between the Salton Sea which lies to its north, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park which lies to its west, the Chocolate Mountains which lie to its northeast and the Mexican border which lies to its south.
Imperial Valley is a pleasant enough place to drive through, with views of mountains in the distance, but as far as I know the actually Valley hasn't got any special attractions for visitors and is probably not worth going any great distance out of your way to visit.
