The origins of the Imperial Japanese Navy trace back to early interactions with nations on the Asian continent, beginning in the early medieval period and reaching a peak of activity during the 16th and 17th centuries at a time of cultural exchange with European powers during the Age of Discovery.
The Imperial Japanese Navy took possession of the island and quelled opposition movements between March to October 1895, and the islands continued to be a Japanese colony until 1945.

A few were still in service during the early months of the Pacific War, earning the Allied codename “Slim.” According to a 1938 report in the Swiss aviation magazine “Interavia”, 200 Siamese officers were to receive training by the Imperial Japanese Air Force.
The Ki-43 was the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force most numerous fighter, being known under the Allied code name “Oscar.” The Ki-43s, although already outclassed by Allied fighters, represented a great increase in performance (as compared to the old Curtiss Hawks and even the Ki-27bs).
In RTN service, the WS-103S's were overall natural metal, with the blue, white and red Thai roundel on the wings and fuselage and the Thai flag on the fin.

 Imperial Japanese Navy Air Force in WWII
The Imperial Japanese Navy Air Force was very conservative and, consequently, many of their operating practices and tactics in World War Two were those which they had adopted from the Royal Navy twenty years before.
With the debut of the first Japanese aircraft carrier in the 1920s, the IJNAF was initially tied to the battleships as some sort of reconnaissance and attack element, but like the U.S. Navy, the IJN had real difficulty integrating them into their tactics.
The Imperial Japanese Army Air Force fought with the IJNAF up until about mid-Summer, but then their remaining aircraft in the Home Islands were mostly grounded and kept in reserve against the expected invasion of the Home Islands.

The Japanese Navy, with Mahanian intellectual roots, prepared tardily and insufficiently for an onslaught not directly related to "decisive battle." The American Navy won a spectacular victory.
These statistics fail to capture the extraordinary indirect effects of both U.S. submarine and air attacks on Japanese merchants as the Japanese had to resort to carrying much of their supplies within the combat zones by slow, inefficient means such as barges, fishing boats and the like.
Using U.S. Navy figures I calculated the cost of the entire fleet of 288 U.S. submarines that served or were built during the war (regardless of whether they served in the Pacific).

The first two letters and the series number remained the same for the service life of each design, however, minor to moderate changes in the design (usually reflected in a new Type Model number) were indicated by adding a second subtype number after the manufacturer's letter.
And a few foreign designed or built aircraft entered Japanese service, and these were given an alphabetical type rather than a numeric one, based on either the country of origin (Type I Heavy Bomber, for the Italian Fiat B.R. 20) or the manufacturer's name (Type LO Transport for the U.S. Lockheed Model 14).
Even the Japanese Army had problems using their lengthy aircraft designations in combat, and assigned popular names to many of the major combat types in service.

The Japanese Mitsubishi Type 00 fighter, codenamed Zeke by the Allies, was faster and more maneuverable than either the US Navy Grumman F4F Wildcat or the British Supermarine Spitfire Mark V. But by 1943, the Japanese would be losing their trained officer core while the Americans were gaining bitter and bloody experience in night fighting.
At the end, it was the submarine that dealt the deathblow to the Imperial Japanese Navy.

Each Air Group consisted of several Air Divisions or hikotai of 9, 12 or 16 aircraft; this was the main IJN Air Service combat unit and was equivalent to the Imperial Japanese Army Air Service's Air Company.

Takeo Kurita was born in 1889 and graduated from the Japanese Naval Academy in 1910.
Specializing in torpedoes, he had extensive service in destroyers during the 1920s and 1930s, and was promoted to Rear Admiral in 1938.
In the latter action, on 24-25 October 1944, he led the main Japanese surface force in the Battle of the Sibuyan Sea and the Battle off Samar, suffering heavy losses at the hands of overwhelming U.S. submarine, air and surface units.
