Imperial unit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term imperial should not be applied to English units that were outlawed in Weights and Measures Act of 1824 or earlier, or which had fallen out of use by that time, nor to post-imperial inventions such as the slug or poundal.
The Imperial gallon was based on the volume of 10 lb of distilled water weighed in air with brass weights with the barometer standing at 30 in and at a temperature of 62 °F.
Imperial units were eliminated from all road signs, although both systems of measurement will still be found on privately-owned signs (such as the height warnings at the entrance of a multi-storey parking facility).

Measuring cups for dry ingredients are now available in sets of four volumes: 25 millilitres, 50 millilitres, 100 millilitres and 250 millilitres.
To measure dry ingredients with these measuring cups, scoop up a cupful, taking care not to press the contents tightly into the measure, then scrape the top with the edge of a knife to even it.
Measuring spoons with a level volume of 1 millilitre, 2 millilitres, 5 millilitres and 12,5 millilitres respectively are used to measure small quantities of both dry and liquid ingredients.

Why did countries change from metric to imperial measurements?
The imperial system was named after the British Empire long ago came from parts of the body like the Eygpian foot (300mm) which was based upon the length of a natural foot.
Thousands of years ago the Romans decided to use 12 as a base unit for example an imperial foot is divided into 12 inches and the yard was used back in the time of early Saxon kings who wore a sash around their waist that was removed and used as a measurement.
The same happened to the measurement of an inch which was one twelth of a foot, and a half inch which was half an inch.

ThothWeb - Your Portal to the Unknown - Thoth, Architect of the Universe: The Great Pyramid and Imperial Measurements
If we were to use this original cubit to measure the circumference of the Great Pyramid, we would discover, to our amazement, that it has a perimeter length of 1760 royal (or Thoth) cubits – exactly the same number of units as contained in the 1760 yard Imperial mile.
However my theory about imperial measurement is that it developed naturally as a result of it being easy to count in threes, twos, fours and sixes all of which are multiples of 12 so it’s no accident that there is base 12 or (duo-decimal) numbering system, firmly embedded in history.
Actually our measurement of time is interesting because by dividing an hour into 12 x 5 minutes (60) so not only does it use halves and quarters by dividing the quarters into thirds and representing them as 5 minutes also allows us to recon time using our fingers.

A reader has taken me to task for using metric measurements in answer to a recent query, when I said that there should be a gap of at least 150mm between downlighters and loft insulation.

It seriously believes that the basic unit of measurement is "the length of the path travelled by light in a vacuum during a timed interval of one 299,729,458th of a second."
The sheer folly of metrication is certainly expressed in its megalomaniac assumption that every form of measurement under the sun qualifies for decimalisation, where the reality of both nature and universal human practice gives that proposition the lie.
Numbers used as the basis of measure were related to the natural world and, as the author John Michell has demonstrated, the foot was applicable to and unified mankind, the earth and the cosmos.

Small concessions such as the printing of Imperial measures in small print along metric on food packaging are likely to be withdrawn in 1999, and the few areas to escape this year's imposition, in particular the weighing of loose fruit in pounds and ounces, will be banned on January 1st 2000.

Second, the imperial system was not developed from some random king's foot size, but was based on a very ancient mathematical understanding wherein the cubic size of water when weighed at the numerical value of about 62 pounds would reveal the measurement of 12 inches on all the sides.
