Topic: The Impossibles

  The Impossibles live at Universalbuzz.com!!!
The Impossibles sprang from the ashes of the tragically named Austin, Texas band 'thefatgirls' in April of 1994 when fatgirls members Rory Phillips (vocals, guitar), Craig Tweedy (bass), and Pat Elliott (drums) found themselves looking for a new singer and a less embarassing name.
Acting as a stand-alone singer for the impossibles first official show, gabe soon also took on second guitar playing duties, a move that would prove critical to the future direction of the band.
By this point the four members of the impossibles were unsure of their futures, with several members wishing to pursue schoolastic goals.

 The Impossibles - Return
For anyone who's heard the guys' first record, you know that the Impossibles are primarily a power-pop/punk band.
After the band released their second cd, a 5-song EP (which included an alternate version of an album track), you could tell the band was trying to get mileage out of what material they had left.
This makes me think that in the few years since the last Impossibles record, the band aged maybe 10 years: Much more technical song writing (for pop-punk that is).

 Ink 19 :: The Impossibles
I believe an Ink 19 review referred to The Impossibles as "the Weezer of ska," and the analogy becomes quite clear when watching them perform.
The Impossibles hold many Weezer-esque traits, like hard rock mixed in with a light, emo feel at times and catchy melodies and harmonies.
What I love most about The Impossibles is their ability to keep a lighthearted feel to their music, but still rock hard and not lose respectability as musicians.

 Impossibles >> Aversion.com
Starting out as a third-wave ska outfit, The Impossibles took the punk/carribbean sounds of third wave ska and build a loud, though at times catchy, monument to the latest wave of ska.
With stronger compositions than many of their contemporaries, the Impossibles manage to display songwriting skills, though never truly transcend the limitations of their chosen genre.
Though the band would be put on a brief hiatus while songwriter Rory Philips would leave for a stint with the Stereo, the band would reunite in 2000, this time moving its focus to straight-up power pop, throwing away its ska leanings.

On the other hand, you have to hand it to The Impossibles for pulling this trick off with such genuine conviction and skill.
While the lyrics are moving in their own right, the chills you’re feeling come from the absolutely gorgeous interplay of Phillips’s and Hascall’s guitars, which sound like birds on a wire serenading each other.

 Impossibles: aversion.com interview
Things haven’t gotten that bad for The Impossibles yet, but it’s only because the band’s too stubborn to cater to the crowds of kids who show up at their shows with their one-track minds set on the band’s long-gone days as a third-wave ska act.
Although The Impossibles cut their teeth on ska-punk in the mid-’90s they’re anything but pigeonholed into the genre.
In just four songs, The Impossibles whiz through everything from their most rocking number to date with a song that makes nods toward hardcore while remaining inside the band’s pop framework ("Get It + Got It + Good") to a loud, chiming pure pop ("Long Way From, Long Time Since").

Rockbites: The Impossibles release EP, set new tour dates
A couple of weeks ago, Austin punk pop quartet The Impossibles (not to be confused with the Sydney, Australia band of the same name) released a great four song EP—proving that last year’s comeback album following their 1998 breakup was no flash in the pan.
Titled 4_song_brick_bomb and very nicely packaged in a slim jewel case with stencil-cut insert and lyrics card, the new set was produced by the prolific Brian McTernan (The Axis Set, Drowningman, The Explosion, Fairweather, Halobox, Milemarker, The Movielife, Reachthesky...) at his Salad Days Studio in College Park, Maryland northeast of Washington, DC.
The Impossibles (vocalists and guitarists Rory and Gabe, bass player Craig, drummer Pat—they don’t mention their surnames) recently finished a 30+ date marathon tour of the US, but hit the road again on 27 July leading up to a stint on this year’s Warped tour (check our tour dates link).
