SPLICEDwire | "Impostor" review (2002) Gary Fleder, Gary Sinise, Madeleine Stowe
But this movie doesn't takes itself so seriously, so it's easier to forgive its plot holes, which are of the cheesy variety.
But there is a good behind-the-scenes featurette and a really cool bonus: "Impostor" was originally supposed to be a short film -- part of an anthology called "Alien Love Triangle" -- and this DVD includes the original 45-minute film.
Any and all problems with "Impostor" stem from the fact that it is structured as one long chase scene.

Impostor - Nitrate Online Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Within moments of his return to work after a getaway weekend in the woods with Maya, Spencer is named an "impostor," a genetically engineered cyborg with a "bomb in his ribcage" (at least he doesn't have a hugely symbolic uterus, like the bomb-carrying girl robot in Eve of Destruction).
But then again, a film might be considered "unpatriotic" (by AG John Ashcroft anyway) if it underlined the racial realities of such government detainment and interrogation "methods." So, best to let the scenario reside in some far-off future, where bomb-carrying cyborgs will look like sincere white guys.
But Impostor can't think of a thing to do with these characters except have them run through dark tunnels, fight off various anonymous attackers, and evade elaborate surveillance technologies.

Recut from its original R-rating, the PG-13 movie finally released is a long chase picture set in a BLADE RUNNER world in the year 2079.
The movie was planned to be just one chapter in a three chapter movie.
The movie, which telegraphs that some big ending twist must be coming, doesn't disappoint when the surprise finally occurs.

That's the premise of "Impostor," a film by Gary Fleder adapted from a short story by science-fiction giant Philip K. Dick.
"Impostor" isn't a bad film, but it's workmanlike in ways that rarely engage the brain or the emotions.
But "Impostor" is the kind of disposable film that's probably being packaged for release on home video even as you read this.

"Impostor" leads the pack as the first sci-fi thriller to bombard movie audiences in 2002.
The so-called "impostor" in this case is scientist Spencer Olham (Gary Sinese), a 21st century scapegoat (in the year 2079 specifically) who comes to the realization that his hide is wanted by the authorities.
As frantic as this movie would like to be, the inane proceedings taking place here feels aimless and unfocused.

 Impostor Review - PlanetWisdom.com
Instead, “Impostor” feels more to me like an episode of “The Twilight Zone”--something you might have seen somewhere before with a twist ending that’s not all that surprising.
Part of the problem with “Impostor” is that so much sci-fi has come and gone since 1953 that all the author’s ideas have been used up.
“Impostor” asks that old sci-fi question, “What does it really mean to be human?” As Christians, we believe that we are who we are because God made us that way.

Impostor is the fourth Hollywood flick to be based on Philip K. Dick material, in this case a short story of his written in the early 1950s.
To be fair, I suppose one can argue that at least the movie does assume that one can read.) The other movies were Blade Runner (1982), Total Recall (1990) and the little seen Screamers (1996).
Impostor is no exception and it shows: much of the movie's mid-section consists of superfluous padding, mostly the heroes getting chased around.

"Impostor" has all the stuff that darkly futuristic, paranoid, semi-apocalyptic, android-populated sci-fi thrillers are supposed to have.
Early on in the movie, there's a bit of preaching about the dangers of paranoia, about how an attack from an external enemy can prompt people to turn on each other and destroy the very thing they're trying to protect.
But as a message movie, "Impostor" unmasks itself as an impostor, reversing itself to the point where it almost suggests that, hey, paranoia isn't such a bad thing after all.

Movie Review | Impostor (2002) Vincent D'Onofrio, Madeleine Stowe
As realized, Impostor is a pointless but expensive film that only just barely manages to entertain because it showcase some nice CGI work and displays a wide variety of nifty “future technology.” One tip-off that even the producers knew they had a turkey on their hands is the pushing back of Impostor’s release date.
The movie was scheduled to be release about a year before it was finally allowed into theaters — only to die a fast death, living little trace that it was ever there.
Impostor is a pointless Chase movie that has nothing else going for it, and doesn’t seem especially bothered by its lack of presence.

Though never boring, Impostor is downright depressing because it's so easy to catch glimpses of the knockout film that lies buried underneath Fleder's mangled direction.
But the fugitive finds an ally, Cale (Mekhi Phifer, O), among the "zoners" outside the shield, and the two plan a run into the medical compound — Olham to prove himself biologically pure, and Cale on a humanitarian mission of his own.
Like the more developed Blade Runner, Impostor raises the questions, "What does it mean to be human?" and "Does an artificial life-form have a soul?" And, like Total Recall, this earlier tale of persecution explores the terrifying malleability of reality, memory, and even identity.

Impostor is an uneven look into a grim future that doesn’t come close to the level of intelligence and visual splendour that can be seen in other films based on the stories of Philip K. Dick.

Considered the first release of the new year, Impostor is a sleeper in the worst sense of the word – which is to say that I actually nodded off briefly during the film, owing to severe boredom with the antics on the screen.
Judging by the bulk of the movie for which I was painfully conscious, however, that idea is more far-fetched than the plot of the film itself.

IMPOSTOR, based the Philip K. Dick story “The Impostor,” presents the age-old science fiction tale of a man who’s told he’s been replaced by a perfect replica, so even he doesn’t know whether or not he’s really himself.
The main problem with IMPOSTOR ends up being the central question of the film, “Is he or isn’t he?” Folks who forget to relax and unhook their brains at the beginning will find the answer far too obvious far too early.
