It is not unusual that when a show opens at Second City, there is a party that starts at the theatre which eventually migrates north, making a stop at ImprovOlympic, then gliding over to the Gingerman Bar and finally settling at the spacious haunts of the Annoyance Theatre.
However, he came to believe that not only could improv be used in the creation of scripted shows as a performance piece, but also as an actual art form–hence the birth of long-form improv.
ImprovOlympic is split into two theatres: the downstairs ("The Family Room") offers "The Harold" shows, while the upstairs ("The Del Close Theatre") provides a venue for more experimental long-form improv excursions.

ImprovOlympic was founded 20 years ago as a training ground for improv actors by the late, great, and inexplicably unsung Del Close, an improv pioneer who branched off from his more mainstream counterparts at Second City to pursue an unorthodox methodology.
A legendary iconoclast, the colorful Close developed a long-form improv technique known as "The Harold." It eschewed the traditional sketch format in favor of more conceptual comedy scenes: The audience suggests a theme for the evening, then a series of skits, monologues, and songs are built around it.
ImprovOlympic offers a nightclub setting for a variety of unscripted nightly performances, from free-form pieces to shows loosely based on concepts such as Star Trek or dating.
