Tracker - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tracker is the generic term for a class of software music sequencers which, in their purest form, allow the user to arrange sound samples stepwise on a timeline across several monophonic channels.
This may be attributable to the close relationship of the tracker to the demoscene, which grew rapidly in Scandinavian countries, and the relative affordability in the UK of computers able to run tracker software.
Tracker files have also become popular in the Game Boy Advance community; unlike the original Game Boy, the Game Boy Advance has the processing power to support tracker music, and the quality is vastly superior to the built-in tone generators, while still taking up little space compared to MP3s or other forms of higher-quality audio.

ModPlug Tracker - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
ModPlug Tracker is a tracker for Windows developed by Olivier Lapicque.
Most trackers, even newer ones such as Renoise and Skale Tracker, have interfaces modelled after the elder DOS trackers (especially FastTracker II).
Consequently, ModPlug Tracker is now being developed actively by a group of trackers/programmers at SourceForge.

Though it looks like some Scream Tracker 3 clone, it outruns Scream Tracker and Fast Tracker II for miles when it comes to features and a professional song structure and even some current trackers today could use some of the better benefits that Impulse Tracker hides.
Besides offering the possibility to support 64 editable channels, Impulse tracker introduced NNA (New Note Action) which is based upon the idea:what to do with the next note played on the same channel when the previous one is still playing.
Impulse tracker is a mile-stone in PC-tracker history along with Scream Tracker 3 and Fast Tracker 2.

Everything in Schism Tracker is (theoretically) configurable at runtime, and the program is more configurable than Impulse Tracker in general.
Schism Tracker doesn't have as flexible a pattern editor as Impulse Tracker (I never quite got the hang of the multiple channel view thing) but it does have a couple of new display modes.
Schism Tracker doesn't offer as many view modes yet (e.g., technical data and note dots are missing) but it will eventually have all of the IT modes and more.

The reason for this is because each tracker has changed the way mods can be written (for example, xm can have more tracks than s3m).
I've heard that Impulse Tracker looks like Scream Tracker, so the concept was probably to make it easy for people who were used to Scream Tracker to adapt to Impulse Tracker.
If you're going to use ModPlug Tracker (which, in my opinion, is better than the DOS trackers), you can choose what type of file to save your mod as- mod, s3m (ScreamTracker mod), xm (Fast Tracker mod), and it (Impulse Tracker mod).

I have been using modplug player as my default player for tracker file formats since 1997, so I thought it could be nice to try seriously the modplug tracker.
There were some voices against it and in favour of the BeroTracker, they said modplug was not fully compatible and was introducing lots of stuff in the impulse tracker files so it would make the it files non-compatible with genuine it files.
