'Exile' allows Hatfield to dig deep into her life and music - The Boston Globe
``In Exile Deo,'' her seventh solo CD, is smart, brash, and beautiful - and arguably the strongest collection of her career.
But there's another kind of exile when a person is trying to do the work of going deep inside oneself to find the roots of one's addictions and patterns of behavior.
A lot of this record was inspired by this Jungian therapy I've been in for a couple of years, digging deeper into everything.

Where that record was sweet and innocent, an outgrowth of the collegiate jangle pop of the '80s, this is a harder record in nearly every sense, from the louder guitars to her world-weary attitude.
In Exile Deo at last resolves her conflicts of interest, and definitely stakes a claim as Hatfield's finest work in a decade.
She's making guitar noises, ones that are maybe not supposed to be picked up by her mic, but she can't help herself, and it's that sense of self-assuredness that makes In Exile Deo such a fun listen.

Juliana Hatfield - In Exile Deo - Zoe / Rounder Records - CD
Always more a rocker-chick than riot-grrrl, she wrote and sang, in a thin, weak, shakey voice, her own brand of confessional, pseudo jangle-pop that, to this writer's ears, was not terribly melodic or accessible (but relatively better than most of her peers).
Hatfield has a new release entitled In Exile Deo on shelves since May 18th, and it is the best disc of her long career.
In Exile Deo is Hatfield's seventh disc proper, and should grow her cult-following considerably.

While she may not be known for having the fastest fingers on the block, she is proud of her technique and gets a bit discouraged when critics fail to acknowledge her efforts.
“In Exile Deo” is Hatfield’s seventh solo album in a career dating back to the late 1980s, when she co-founded cult trio the Blake Babies while studying at the Berklee College of Music in her Boston hometown.

Juliana Hatfield : In Exile Deo - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
It took her awhile to find her footing as an indie cult artist, but as the new millennium began, she released the appealingly modest Beautiful Creature, which suggested the beginning of a comeback.
After a detour with the female alt-rock supergroup Some Girls, she returned refreshed with In Exile Deo, her strongest album in years, rivaling her indie pop breakthrough, Hey Babe.
Her voice has rough edges, lending the album a sense of gravity, and the production is similarly lively and ragged, and that's why In Exile Deo is exciting and fun even if all the songs are about dysfunctional relationships.

CLUAS Indie Album Reviews: Juliana Hatfield 'In Exile Deo'
Juliana Hatfield first rose to prominence in the early 1990s when her song 'Spin the Bottle' from her major label debut album 'Become What You Are' was included on the soundtrack of the slacker comedy 'Reality Bites' (1994).
I thought 'In Exile Deo' was a decently structured, performed and produced set of songs but that lyrically and melodically it a little dull and, to borrow an acidly curt phrase from Tom Petty, I didn't hear a single.
'In Exile Deo' isn't that album and, even if it was, I doubt that the popular success which Raitt has enjoyed from the 1990s on would make Hatfield happy.

The Brownsville Herald » Juliana Hatfield delivers some of her best work on In Exile Deo   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
This might have been a sign that the album was going to be a vacuous, watered down attempt at mainstream success, stripping Hatfield of her signature plaintive lyrics and indie rock ethos, but that’s certainly not the case here.
Deo is not exactly original, but it is distinctly Hatfield, showcasing her bittersweet narratives and girlish singing while switching between jangly singer/songwriter fare, gnarled blues rockers and poignant ballads.
She misses the mark though with the bloated blues of “Dirty Dog” (there really should be a rule against dogs barking on pop records), but the rocking on Deo iskept to minimum.

After hearing IN EXILE DEO--Hatfield`s first full-length album since 2000`s BEAUTIFUL CREATURE--it`s clear that she is not willing to age gracefully.
The former Blake Baby`s gauzy, breathy, little-girl-lost voice has ripened--it`s a bit deeper, a bit tougher (without being overly dramatic), sounding like someone being dragged into adulthood, reluctantly shedding what remains of youthful innocence.
Alternately forlorn and confrontational, IN EXILE DEO goes a long way towards proving that indie rockers can get older without getting soft.

Hatfield perpetuates her career-long tendency to overwhelm her fragile-but-expressive voice with cranked-up rock arrangements topped by her own electric guitar, obscuring the nuances of her vocal performances.
For In Exile Deo she’s assembled a group of players who display utter competence but no particular feel for the material, resulting in performances that frequently come off as arbitrary, and sometimes downright generic.
One can only hope that she’s on the way to expressing something altogether revelatory in her music; at the very least, In Exile Deo provides proof of her determination to get there and evidence that she has the means to pull it off.

After a stint with the female alt-rock supergroup Some Girls, she has at last returned with In Exile Deo, which some critics seem to think is a significant return to form, but to my ears is certainly not up to par with her better records and considering the wait, without question a disappointment.
Though her lyrics here are smarter and pack a wry, knowing sense of irony, (she looks at dysfunction as it applies to relationships and drugs) missing is her usually reliable knack for wringing a nice hooky melody out of a chorus.
