Old Chicago was a combination shopping mall and indoor amusement park that existed in the Chicago suburb of Bolingbrook, Illinois from 1975 until 1981.
Designer Robert Brindle conceived of the idea behind Old Chicago after a visit to Knott's Berry Farm amusement park in California and wished to put an entire park - complete with roller coaster, ferris wheel, and water slides - indoors so that it could be open year round.
Over two years in the making, Old Chicago was opened to the public June 17, 1975 in a pre-grand opening party that attracted over 10,000 invited guests, causing massive traffic jams.

Old Chicago has it's share of troubles and even though it opened big it did not even last long into 1980 before being closed down.
As a kid I grew up only a few miles from Old Chicago and it was my first exposure to the magic of amusement parks and roller coasters which has stayed with me ever since.

All the stores were themed to Chicago in the 1890's and they went to great lengths to make it accurate even to get castings of streetlights of the time for the mall.
The stores in Old Chicago were mainly small specialty shops with no large retailers like Sears that you would normally see in a mall.
Personally I think Old Chicago would have lasted longer if there were several anchor stores in the mall to attract more local people.

The scenes depicting the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 are simply astounding, moment after moment making one wonder how they did it all with the technology of the late 30's.
Of course, initially one has to sit through the first hour of the movie, which I have to say is sort of quaint and old-fashioned with its fictionalized and slightly soapy version of the lives of the O'Leary family.
"In Old Chicago" was a blockbuster movie made in 1937, a box office smash which contributed significantly to the emergence of 20th Century Fox as a major studio.
