Topic: In a Different Voice

  Gilligan
Gilligan's reply was to assert that women were not inferior in their personal or moral development, but that they were different.
This is a classic critique of psychological theory: women are different, but they are not thereby inferior.
Different conditions produce a difference in the measured variable.

  Carol Gilligan - passages
To have a voice is to be human.
Yet in the different voice of women lies the truth of an ethic of care, the tie between relationship and responsibility, and the origins of aggression in the failure of connection.
The failure to see the different reality of women's lives and to hear the differences in their voices stems in part from the assumption that there is a single mode of social experience and interpretation.

 MSCL.COM - [Angela´s World - The Different Voice of MSCL] - My So-Called Life
Gilligan asserts that this "different voice" is one of relationship and connection.
Angela's world is inhabited principally by characters who are of the "different voice," characters whose voice and opinions are not heard in the "mainstream" of American society: Girls, non-whites, gays, professional women, a father who is not the principle wage earner.
While Brian may be viewed as a fumbling adolescent, he is also the voice of the "mainstream," which cannot, and may not wish to, hear or listen to the "different voice." But the "different voice" knows that to control its own destiny, it must make itself heard.

 Unit 5 - Women's Different Voice
Within different voice theory (also referred to as cultural feminism, or relational justice, or difference theory), women's valuable resources that might serve as a better model of social organization and law than existing "male" characteristics and values.
These differences are said to include a greater sense of interconnectedness, a priority on relationships over rights, and a preference for more contextualized, less abstract forms of reasoning.
Many advocates of the theories propounded in previous [unit]s of this book view different voice theory with suspicion, because of the risk that the attribution of certain common values to women will reinforce the ideologies of subordination that those theories are intended to dispel.

Voice Information and Resources from Voiceproblem.org
Other times, voice complaints are not considered to be part of a voice disorder – especially if the complaints have been present for a long time or most of the patient's life.
If voice symptoms persist for more than two or three weeks after a cold or flu has gone away – especially if the patient is a smoker – an ear, nose, and throat physician specialist (ENT, otolaryngologist) or physician voice specialist (laryngologist) should be consulted right away.
Although physicians differ slightly in their diagnostic approaches and methodologies, in general the use of the different diagnostic methods proceeds in an orderly sequence with physicians progressing to the next examination until a diagnosis is determined.

Carol Gilligan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Her fame rests primarily on In a Different Voice: Psychological Theory and Women's Development (1982) in which she criticized Kohlberg's research on the moral development of children, which at the time showed that girls on average reached a lower level of moral development than boys did.
She claimed that the results of Kohlberg were biased because the participants in the basic study were largely male, and that the scoring method subsequently used tended to favor a principled way of reasoning that was more common to boys, over a moral argumentation concentrating on relations, which would be more amenable to girls.
In particular, Christina Hoff Sommers, in her book The War Against Boys notes that the In a Different Voice studies did not follow standard research protocol.

Carol Gilligan: In A Different Voice.   (Site not responding. Last check: )
One problem in talking about difference and the consequent theorizing of "difference" lies in the readiness with which difference becomes deviance and deviance becomes sin in a society preoccupied with normality, in the thrall of statistics, and historically puritanical.
The difficulty women experience in finding or speaking publicly in their own voices emerges repeatedly in the form of qualification and self-doubt, but also in intimations of a divided judgment, a public assessment and private assessment which are fundamentally at odds.
Thus the images of hierarchy and web inform different modes of assertion and response: the wish to be alone at the top and the consequent fear that others will get too close; the wish to be at the center of connection and the consequent fear of being too far out on the edge.

Kathy Davis - Cosmetic Surgery in a Different Voice
According to her student, Regnault, Noël was a versatile surgeon who performed many different and often quite bold interventions - reshaping the breasts, slimming the abdomen and arms, excising fat from the legs and or eliminating wrinkles in the hand by injecting a sclerosing solution into the blood vessels.
She developed a special measuring band called a 'craniometer' which she placed at the center of the patient's forehead and used as a guide for ensuring that one side of the patient's face would be aligned with the other.
As such, her case might be regarded as an example of cosmetic surgery in a different voice.

Psychotherapy Networker Interview with Carol Gilligan   (Site not responding. Last check: )
In a Different Voice challenged theories of psychological development—based on studies of men and boys only—that, since the time of Aristotle, had assumed women were inferior to men in their capacity for moral reasoning and lacked a clear sense of self.
Gilligan showed how women’s voices, once heard in their own right and with their own integrity, change the conversation by drawing attention to aspects of human experience that previously were dismissed or silenced.
I had said very clearly in In a Different Voice, that the “different voice I describe is identified not by gender but by theme.” My point was that including women changed the voice of the conversation, leading both women and men to hear themselves and one another differently.

It changes your voice by digitizing it, which enables you to make your voice sound very high like a woman or very deep like a man. The degree of change can be adjusted as you are speaking.
Since the voice is electronically processed through an encoded chip and changed to a digital format, voice prints and voice stress analyzers generally aren't effective against it.

The excerpts are chosen for several reasons: (1) to focus on the basic point about normative biases, (2) to show the potential bias is the way we ask questions, (3) to focus on the most common text-book example of the Heinz dillemma, and (4) to reinforce student's understanding of classic developmental theories.
Try to focus their attention on what is really at the core of the two voices and try to separate that from individual's beliefs of how men and women are different from each other in general.

 Communication Theory: A First Look
Her 1982 book, In a Different Voice, presents a theory of moral development which claims that women tend to think and speak in a different way than men when they confront ethical dilemmas.
The difference between the self-descriptions of men and of women is consistent with a distinction long recognized in the field of group dynamics, Groups need a mix of task-oriented and relationship-oriented members.
Rather than relying on hypothetical dilemmas to spot different nuances in the feminine voice, she was determined to hear women speak about real-life moral struggles where they had the power to chose.

In a Different Voicehas inspired new research, new educational initiatives, and political debate-and helped many women and men to see themselves and each other in a different light.

The Harvard Crimson :: News :: Exploring Voices in a World of Difference
In a Different Voice suggested that their are two ways of thinking about questions of morality, called by Gilligan the "care voice" and the "justice voice." While the justice voice tends to accent abstract principles and laws as reasons for moral behavior, the care voice deals more with emotions and relationships between people.
Although Gilligan writes in her book "the different voice I describe is characterized not by gender but by theme," she does see the care voice as one which occurs more often and more consistently in women.
Gilligan's message to college-aged women is to "listen" for the voices of the girls within them and make an effort to "change the existing order" which may have repressed that voice.

Also Skuld's english voice actress for the movie seemed a bit off to me, not sure how to describe it but it was like she was too American.
I LOVED the sassiness to Urd and Sayoko's voices in the OAVs and the high pitch of Skuld's voice really went with her character (if you thought Pamela Weidner has an annoying voice its because Skuld is sometimes annoying and bratty, lol).

Notes on "In a Different Voice" by Carol Gilligan
And since men have dominated the discussion of moral theory, women's perspective is often not taken seriously, and is considered to be less developed and sophisticated.
For men, recognition through experience of the need for more active responsibility in taking care corrects the potential indifference of a morality of noninterference and turns attention from the logic to the consequences of choice [refs].
One benefit of reading this book is coming to appreciate “I’m really not sure; it depends on the situation” as a thoughtful and sophisticated response to a question of morality.
