The Latin phrase in necessariis unitas, in dubiis libertas, in omnibus caritas means "in certain things unity; in doubtful things liberty; in all things charity".
It is often misattributed to St. Augustine of Hippo, but seems to have been first used in the seventeenth century by a German Lutheran theologian called Rupertus Meldenius in the form "in necesariis unita[s], in non-necessariis liberta[s], in utrisque charita[s]", meaning "in certain things, unity; in uncertain things, liberty; and in both, charity".
It is widely quoted in defence of theological and religious freedom.

The wavy bars of blue and white are a heraldic representation of the ocean, in this case the Pacific Ocean; the mission bell in its own color--bronze of course--represents the Spanish missionary heritage of the American Southwest, especially California and Arizona.
The motto, added by Bishop Willars himself, is "In Omnibus Caritas," "In All Things Charity." This is part of a saying of Saint Augustine of Hippo: "In necessariis unitas, in dubiis libertas, in omnibus caritas," "in necessary things unity, in doubtful things liberty, in all things charity."
The see of the Pacific Southwest was vacant until a new Bishop Ordinary was elected and consecrated in Spring 1993; however, the second bishop of the diocese resigned in August 1997, and the see has again been vacant since that time.

From this review of basic theological principles, it would seem to me that when competent theologians disagree on the exact note to attribute to magisterial teaching, individual Basilians should charitably respect the consciences of their confreres.
According to the saying attributed to Pope John XXIII, "In necessariis unitas, in dubiis libertas, in omnibus caritas." The Letter of James also tells us that our anger does not bring about the justice of God (see James 1:20).
A new situation, however, has come about today in the Church at large because of the communication media and the wider education of the faithful.

Beware also of the odd "Independent Catholic" or "American Catholic" or "Old Catholic" churches here, which just call themselves "Catholic." Sadly, all of the Masses in Vegas are Clown Masses except for one parish on the Strip which has a showgirl Mass.

Caritas Unitas et Veritas   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Perhaps the name of this blog could be slightly modified to "Unitas, Libertas, et Caritas", which would be more consistent with the famous phrase "In necessariis, unitas, in dubiis, libertas, in omnibus, caritas" (on the origin of which see here).
I'm also of an inquisitive and (on some things) a slightly skeptical bent, and will likely be asking lots of questions, or acting as devil's advocate.
The purpose: to discuss issues in a spirit of Caritas (keeping the discussion civil, and remembering that our fellow bloggers and commentors are brethren in Christ), Unitas (remembering that we're all Catholic, and finding some common ground), and Veritas (pursuing the truth -- indeed, Truth Himself --, and maintaining a spirit of honest inquiry).

"The communion of saints" and full communion do not mean abstract uniformity but a wealth of legitimate diversities in gifts shared and recognized by all, according to the well-known proverb: "in necessariis unitas, in dubiis libertas, in omnibus caritas".
A spirituality of communion also means an ability to think of our Christian brothers or sisters, in the deep unity born from Baptism, "as 'those who are a part of me'.

In this article I would like to propose as one guiding principle a maxim, the theological roots of which go back to the early church.
in dubiis, libertas...in omnibus, caritas—"unity in what is essential, liberty in matters of doubt, and charity in all things." (A variant of this maxim substitutes in non necessariis, "in nonessentials," for the middle clause).
It would reappear in No. 92 of the Second Vatican Council's "Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World." I believe this maxim offers some much needed theological and historical perspective for those who wish to find more productive ways of dealing with the difficult issues that divide us in the church.
