In The Court Of The Crimson King - King Crimson - Pandora Internet Radio
This reissue of King Crimson's debut, In the Court of the Crimson King (1969), renders all previous pressings obsolete.
In the late '90s, Robert Fripp remastered the entire Crimson catalog for inclusion in a 30th anniversary edition.
Initially, King Crimson consisted of Robert Fripp (guitar), Ian McDonald (reeds/woodwind/vibes/keyboards/Mellotron/vocals), Greg Lake (bass/vocals), Michael Giles (drums/percussion/vocals), and Peter Sinfield (words/illuminations).

When it comes to talking about the paradigmatic example of such a phenomenon my choice would be King Crimson and their debut album "In the Court of the Crimson King." Released in 1969 with its distinctive cover art, this was the album that set the standard for progressive/psychedelic rock for the next decade.
The result is that "In the Court of the Crimson King" is one of the albums that has to be considered when you are making a list of top albums from the Sixites or in the history of progressive rock music.
In 'The Court Of The Crimson King' by King Crimson almost single handedly invented what was to become known as progressive rock, and with first track '21st Century Schizoid Man' had a fair hand at putting heavy metal music on the map.

When the dust had settled, King Crimson was crowned rock’s new champion, ushering in a golden age of music where brute force and beauty commingle with the sounds of distant worlds.
Though perhaps inspired by the psychedelic spelunkering of The Beatles, Pink Floyd and Cream, King Crimson was birthed a titan, fully formed in body and in vision.
In The Court of the Crimson King remains the cornerstone of the temple, and thus a cornerstone of any progressive rock collection.

King Crimson's debut was music turned magical invocation, the force of creation funneled through the fingers of man. The band that would be king started innocently enough in the eponymous psychedelic outfit of Giles, Giles and Fripp.
With the addition of John Wetton, Bill Bruford and David Cross, King Crimson found a measure of stability and skill that allowed Fripp to craft the band's original chaos into a refined formula, a unique amalgam of pomp and perfectionism, destruction and discipline.
Crimson's death turned out to be dormancy when Fripp and Bruford returned in 1981 (with Tony Levin and Adrian Belew) on a new album, Discipline.

King Crimson may be the only commercially important prog rock band to blend dazzling musicianship with real artistic integrity.
Crimson had long since become a revolving door for prog rock musicians, with Fripp being the only constant and none of their efforts approaching the debut in quality or commercial success.
But Crimson's arrangements had gotten staggeringly complex by this point, and hardly anything is lost in the transition to the stage - thanks to the rhythm section's jaw-dropping virtuosity and the rich interplay between Fripp and Belew's arpeggiating guitars ("Sleepless").

One of Robert Fripp’s strengths has been his ability to stare down his detractors and go his own way; and King Crimson’s singular output is yet another example disproving the axiom of unimaginative musicians everywhere that nothing new can be done under the sun (conveniently excusing them from trying).
At their best, King Crimson prove that art for art’s sake may not be such a bad thing after all.
Crimson’ lyrics and music may be meant to reflect each other ironically and there are times when Fripp’s musical landscapes seem ominously existential, or impassively evil.

King Crimson: In The Court Of The Crimson King - An Analysis by Andrew Keeling
ITCOTCK is like a giant symphonic work in five movements, unified by a rising tone which is included as a localised event in 'I Talk to the Wind' (E-F# in the chorus) and 'Schizoid Man' (opening riff, Bb-C/F-G).
However, King Crimson deal with the lunar aspect of the Schoenberg in a very different way: the moon, in the case of the King Crimson, is not the nightmarish soundworld of 'Pierrot...' but more to do with 'play'.
The title piece of ITCOTCK was, according to Peter Sinfield (E-mail to Andrew Keeling, April 9, 2000), already written: 'a complete Dylanesque song that I had written both words and music for.' However Sinfield goes on to say that Ian McDonald rewrote the music to the words.

The moods created are very effective, and reminiscent of what was to come, though King Crimson had an agressive streak that nobody was quite able to match.
