Movies | The good old summertime
Everything old is made new again this summer as Hollywood passes on sequels for adaptations, remakes, and revisions of films, TV shows, and video games.
Perhaps these new versions of old properties are attempts not to rob but to reinvent the past — not just to reprise it but to make it better.
Based on Dianne Wynne Jones young adult novel, Howl’s Moving Castle (June 10) is set in a magic kingdom where young girls are menaced by the Witch of Waste and by the title count, who sucks their souls away.

Judy Garland Database film review: "In the Good Old Summertime"   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
In the Good Old Summertime is a musical remake of The Shop Around the Corner, produced by MGM in 1940, and starring James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan.
The number "Last Night When We Were Young," sung by Judy Garland after missing her pen pal at the restaurant, was cut from the film beacause it was considered too somber for the otherwise light-hearted story.
Sometimes Judy would look at the rushes - sometimes she liked herself and sometimes she didn't - but she was never right, because her own conception of herself was not as good as the director's, mine or the audience's.

In the Good Old Summertime is a peppy and unassuming musical whose modest but undeniable charms will be enjoyed most by audiences unfamiliar with the movie (The Shop Around the Corner) upon which it is based.
Amazingly none of that is evident in "In the Good Old Summertime", which finds her delivering a wonderfully controlled and at times wistful performance as a young employee of a music store in turn of the century Chicago who is having a romantic letter correspondance with a penpal who addresses himself simply as "dear friend".
None of this sadness is evident in "In The Good Old Summertime", thankfully and what we have here is a movie with gorgeous technicolour, many fine musical numbers delivered by Garland and a funny, and touching story set against a beautiful "MGM", Christmas.

In the Good Old Summertime (1949) was a remake of Shop Around the Corner, which had starred James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan nine years earlier.
Judy's flair for comedy is delicious in her initial meeting with Van, where they both get increasingly tangled up with her dress, his bicycle, her hair, his gloves, her hat, its ornaments ("Here's your bird...") -- leaving her a disheveled wreck as he cycles happily away.
Summertime is full of barbershop-quartet-era charm, and has Judy singing "Meet Me Tonight in Dreamland", "I Don't Care", and "Put Your Arms Around Me, Honey" with her usual fervor.

This is the film in which 18-month-old Liza Minnelli (Garland's daughter) toddles into the closing number, though it is not her film debut, as has often been claimed: an even younger Minnelli popped up briefly in Garland's previous MGM musical Easter Parade.

Summertime, depending on where you live, it can either be a pleasure or miserable.
Regardless of your personal climactic position, summertime in most latitudes brings outdoor activities, baseball (or your local sport of choice), family gatherings and often, a trip to the seaside to soak up the rays and cool off in the ocean's waters.

It would be easy to mock, except that the Great American Family Drama, the bedrock of our stage for most of this century, can sometimes crackle when played before audiences in small rural towns and suburbs in a way it rarely does when played before loucher metropolitan crowds.
Summer theater is packaged and sold to us as an affirmation of community, and, at its worst, the bland guff of the marketing infects what’s up on stage; a good family drama allows the audience to test that faith in community, which is about as testing as summer theater’s prepared to go.
