In the Mouth of Madness - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the Mouth of Madness (also known as John Carpenter's In the Mouth of Madness) is a 1995 horror film (originally intended for a 1994 release) directed by John Carpenter and written by Michael de Luca, who was at the time in charge of New Line Cinema.
The title is a play on one of Lovecraft's most famous tales, "At the Mountains of Madness" and insanity plays a large role in the film as it does in Lovecraft's fiction.
It would be a mistake to call In the Mouth of Madness a "Lovecraft film" in the strictest sense; it is a Lovecraft pastiche.

Although a little atypical in its subject matter, “In The Mouth Of Madness” is certainly one of the films that combine and showcase most of his impeccable skills at once and also has to rank as one of the director’s most challenging achievements.
In the case of “In The Mouth Of Madness”, New Line has added the superb commentary track by John Carpenter and cinematographer Gary B. Kibbe, that was also part of the movie’s Laserdisc release.
As John Carpenter puts it himself in the commentary, “In The Mouth Of Madness” is the third part in his “Apocalypse Trilogy” that started with “The Thing”.

THE CINEMA LASER DVD REVIEW-- IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS
IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS ($25) is a movie that I find myself liking more and more every time I see it, which has caused me to reevaluate my earlier tepid opinion of the film.
Additionally, because of my appreciation for IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS, I have become a fan of the atmospheric horror stories H.P. Lovecraft, from which Michael De Luca drew his inspiration for the film’s screenplay.
Sure, the plot of IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS begins to unravel a bit towards the end, but for the most part, the movie succeeds in bringing some genuine "Lovecraftian" style horror to the screen.

Kane may or may not be weeks late turning in his latest manuscript, which may or may not be an apocalyptic treatise which drives readers mad and prepares the way for the elimination of humanity and its replacement with some hideous ancient life form.
And all of this may or may not be a publicity stunt taking place in a fictitious town where all Kane's characters may or may not have come to life, and may or may not be acting out their violent misdeeds.
Admittedly, some of Carpenter's plot elements are as old and creaky as the cathedral doors behind which Kane promulgates his madness, and the director is often too quick to shuck his sense of the eerie for an axe-wielding maniac or slimy monster.

I like In the Mouth of Madness, I like what it tried to be and the film can be effectively creepy at times, but a lot of the effects did not live up to the ideas potential.

In the Mouth of Madness, like They Live and Escape From New York, can be enjoyed simply as a genre film or perceived as a social satire; its artistic success lies in its ability to skilfully combine the two.
In the Mouth of Madness is aided immeasurably by the excellent performance of Sam Neill, who also played the villain in Memoirs of an Invisible Man. As Trent, Neill is required gradually to lose control of his sanity; he is initially convinced that the author has staged his own disappearance to boost sales.
The film ends with much of the world's population driven mad, leaving a dazed, psychotic Trent free to attend a deserted screening of the adaptation of the novel, directed of course by John Carpenter.

In the Mouth of Madness (henceforth ITMOM) opens as John Trent (Sam Neill) is being dragged into an insane asylum, with characters making vague references to a seemingly widespread epidemic of madness.
ITMOM never builds toward anything (or anything satisfying, at least), never achieves the suspenseful pacing of Carpenter's finer films like The Thing.
Well, the film addresses this by asserting that "In the Mouth of Madness" is being filmed for those who don't read and, in its final moments, Trent stumbles into a theater to view the film we have just seen; while not a dramatically satisfactory ending, it's at least good for a chuckle.
