The ophthalmologist said it's probably just a combination of dry eyes and strain from too much time in front of the computer, but his bedside manner was terrible as he tried to shoo me out of the office without answering my questions because he didn't want to miss his flight.
Having a hospital two blocks from home is convenient at times like this and after about an hour of tests the doctor was able to rule out any major we-need-to-operate-on-you-today-or-you'll-go-blind problems and gave me the number of an ophthalmologist hoping they'd be able to see me today.

The purpose of the metamorphosis from caterpillar to butterfly is to pass on what one has learned in the hopes of freeing someone else.

Dominican American author Julia Alvarez's novel In the Time of the Butterflies (1994) is based upon the well-known Dominican story of the Mirabal sisters.
When Alvarez discovered in the early 1990s that a fourth Mirabal sister, Dede, was alive in the Dominican Republic, she interviewed her, and In the Time of the Butterflies grew out of that experience.
In the Time of the Butterflies can be seen to resist both a monolithic genetic category and a single, authoritative narrative voice in its "centrifugal" or fragmented tendency.

In the Time of the Butterflies tells the real-life story of the Mirabal sisters, courageous revolutionaries known covertly as las Mariposas ("the Butterflies").
All of the strength of the Mirabal sisters is devastated by their wimpy portrayals onscreen here; Minerva seems less like a visionary rebel who will lead a nation and more like a clueless teenager who happened to follow the footsteps of a crush.

In the Time of the Butterflies is a deeply human realization of complex themes: the dynamic between the personal and the political, and individual struggle in the face of oppression.
As a child in 1960, Alvarez and her family fled the Dominican Republic and settled in New York, to avoid the secret police's retaliation for her father's involvement in underground activities.
In the postscript, the author asserts, "A novel is, after all, not a historical document, but a way to travel through the human heart." In the Time of the Butterflies is such a journey, demanding and courageous in the way of those sisters whose travel inspired its telling.
