 Hayek gets serious in 'Butterflies'
"In the Time of the Butterflies" is Salma Hayek's serious movie, after all those action flicks and her coquettish turns on late-night talk shows.
The Showtime movie, on Sunday night, is based on a Julia Alvarez novel about real people -- three sisters who were tragic heroines of the popular resistance to the Leonidas Trujillo dictatorship in the Dominican Republic.
As the movie has it, a world of misery could have been avoided if only Trujillo hadn't invited Minerva to a ball in Santo Domingo, and then pawed her behind when he danced with her.

Hopefully Ken there was a forgotten word in there somewhere because if the movie is about the book "In the time of the Butterflies" then it HAS to be about The Mirabal sisters, since that this the whole book.

Plot Outline: In the Time of the Butterflies is inspired by the true story of the three Mirabal sisters who, in 1960, were murdered for their part in an underground plot to overthrow the government.
"Butterflies", the code name for three sisters and underground resistance conspirators in the Dominican Republic during the dictatorial Trujillo regime, bounds through time like a mediocre biopic taking pause at moments obviously designed to evoke emotion rather than infusing a sense of reality.

Alvarez breathes life into these historical figures--known as "las mariposas," or "the butterflies," in the underground--as she imagines their teenage years, their gradual involvement with the revolution, and their terror as their dissentience is uncovered.
Her novel is a statement about politics and history told in very human terms and, as importantly, told not with outrage, but with self-possession.
The movie, albeit wonderful, does not cover the depth of the characters and the social situation of the Dominican Republic in this time period as well as the book does.

Many of the major events in her life were helped by the will of Trujillo who must have been captivated or blinded by her charisma.
