The combination of a relational database, InDesign and Adobe InCopy word processor, which uses the same formatting engine as InDesign, is the heart of several publishing systems designed for newspapers, magazines, and other publishing environments; InDesign and InCopy can work together in small publishing workgroup environments without needing a dedicated system or relational database.

 XML.com: Adobe's InDesign and XML
Applications that interact with documents (whether it be InDesign, an XSL-FO processor, web browser, or even Microsoft Word) use the concept of styles, which allow any number of components of a document to have their appearance governed by a style declaration.
InDesign alleviates this problem by allowing us to define a template and an XML file to provide the necessary information for a document.
Adobe has applied the template concepts used in other XML technologies to InDesign's visual environment (and made them accessible to designers in the process), allowing InDesign to cooperate with applications on a level that was previously impossible.

Macworld: Feature: QuarkXPress versus InDesign   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
With InDesign, you can perform multiple undos, redefine style-sheet definitions based on changes you've made to a page, select a guide and then use the keyboard to position it, and merge two stories by linking their text boxes.
InDesign 2 has a plethora of other timesaving type features, such as hanging punctuation slightly outside the margins of justified text, and optical kerning to automatically adjust spacing between characters (based on their shapes) -- both were also available in version 1.X. XPress provides neither of these features.
InDesign has powerful scripting tools for both Mac OS and Windows, but if you depend on AppleScripts that control XPress, be warned: they don't work in InDesign.

An Adobe InDesign document may be damaged if an error or other unexpected behavior occurs while you work in it but not while you work in other documents.
Though InDesign has an automatic document recovery feature that can prevent damage caused by system crashes or power outages, it cannot prevent damage caused by other system-level problems such as software conflicts, low disk space, or viruses.
This troubleshooting guide can help you isolate and resolve damage in an InDesign document; it can also help you isolate and resolve system-level problems that appear to be document damage but are related to other causes.

Quark VS InDesign - » DTP Tools Makes InDesign History
Toward the end of an InDesign training class or seminar one of my favorite things to do is to use InDesign’s undo history to step backward through the preceding seven hours of work, one demonstrated tool or feature at a time—CMD+Z time-traveling past numerous saves, all the way back to a blank page.
InDesign CS, wonderous, beautiful creation that it is, lacks among its cornucopia of palettes the one that has been for so long indispensable in older brother Photoshop.
DTP Tools’ History for InDesign CS (and History for InCopy CS) is such a fundamental tool, a feature InDesign should have had all along, that, now that it is finally available, no InDesign user should be without it.

InDesign also does away with the Eyedropper/Paintbucket switching routine, instead favoring a simpler process of automatically toggling between an empty Eyedropper and a filled one.
InDesign 1.5 streamlines the image-masking process by reading the clipping paths or Alpha Channels on files imported from Photoshop, and by offering its own automatic edge detection for images that don't already have masks.
It was the shortcomings of InDesign 1.0 and its lack of feature parity to XPress that overshadowed these highlights.

PDF information: InDesign and PDF   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
During the initial beta-program, everybody was convinced that InDesign would be completely based on PDF: its native file format would be PDF and you were going to be able to edit PDF-files with it.
InDesign offers complete support for PDF: you can place PDF-files in an InDesign page, as if they were EPS-files, and you can export publications to PDF.
But even this approach sometimes leads to surprises: I have had problems with fonts that got subsetted in the resulting PDF even though they were 'embedded' according to a PitStop preflight report.

The Critical Eye | Adobe InDesign 2.0   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
When InDesign 1.0 was actually released in fall of 1999, reactions were mixed.
At this point it should be mentioned that while the initial InDesign release was overtly positioned as a Quark-killer, some of Adobe's existing user base feared that it might also spell the demise of FrameMaker--the tool of choice for fastidious technical writers.
I wouldn't quite say InDesign is now the Quark-killer it set out to be; after all, software is a moving target, and QuarkXPress 5.0 has only just seen the light of day, nearly two months on the heels of InDesign 2.0.
