And then we come to the 17 minute plus 'In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida', and its instantly appealing hypnotic rhythm and Ingle's rich, growling plea to come into the Garden of Eden.
Two tracks starting the album then, which would come in the mainstream category.
Raw blues meets bubblegum, well, it works, though, on first hearing this seemed the weakest track on the album, and dragged - maybe because I was waiting for that track!

In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida (song) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida", released in 1968, was a 17 minute rock song by Iron Butterfly, released on the album of the same name, occupying the entire second side of the album.
The riff is used as the basis for extended organ and guitar solos, which are interrupted in the middle by an extended drum solo, one of the first such solos on a rock record, and probably one of the most famous in rock.
A commonly repeated story says that the song title was originally "In The Garden Of Eden", but in the course of rehearsing and recording singer Doug Ingle slurred the words into the nonsense phrase of the title while under the influence of LSD.

Legend has it that the lead singer was so drunk when he first announced the song's title that one of the band members wrote down phonetically the slurred words 'In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida'.
The name In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida is taken from the title track of an LP released in 1968 by the West Coast rock band, Iron Butterfly.
The song was originally going to be called 'In the Garden of Eden'.

Vida would never would have succeeded without the help of FM radio, whose free-form stoner “Ten records back-to-back for all you heads out there!” style had just taken off.
Ironically, the song’s origins are far removed from the crypto-blasphemist metal beast it became.

The rest of the tunes reveal that Iron Butterfly did indeed possess some pop sensibility to leaven the heaviness; "Flowers and Beads" in particular is simultaneously a romantic '60s pop-rock ballad and a subtle but surprising swipe at flower power culture.
Iron Butterfly was the American answer to the heavy riff-rock of British groups like Cream and Led Zeppelin, with a touch of Vanilla Fudge's organ-led theatricality and the Doors' mysterioso image.

The album was a potpourri of rock 'n' roll, Western classical music, Indian classical music, early 20th-century vaudeville music, and modern electronic music employing compositional techniques such as indeterminacy and playing tapes backwards, as pioneered by the composer Karlheinz Stockhausen whose photo appeared on the album cover along with a host of other celebrities.
Considering the high quality of all the other performances on the album -- and the sloppiness of the accordion part -- it is possible that Paul McCartney (the actual composer of Rocky Raccoon), intended the accordion to represent the drunk doctor and therefore deliberately had the instrument played badly.
The harmonica did not appear at all in the album Rubber Soul (Parlophone: December 3, 1965) although the harmonium appeared in two songs from this album: If I Needed Someone and The Word.

British audiences never warmed to the band, but In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida was for a long time Atlantic's most successful album and has never been deleted.
However, the album of the same name quickly became a favourite with American rock fans, while Iron Butterfly became the first group to be defined as "heavy metal".

DVD Talk Forum - 'In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida' guitarist dead
I heard a brief sample, but they played the brief part of singing, the song I'm thinking of has a heavy drum ending (the thing lots of bands do to end a song) and of course the idiot dj didn't say anything about it, they did say that it was a southern rock weekend.
Is there anyway some one can shoot me an email of a brief sample of the riff, since I think I have heard of it before, but just want to make sure before buying a cd for a song that I have never heard of.
