In-circuit emulator - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In-circuit emulation can also refer to the use of hardware emulation, when the emulator is plugged into a system (not always embedded) in place of a yet-to-be-built chip (not always a processor).
An in-circuit emulator (ICE) also called on-circuit debugger (OCD) or background debug module (BDM) is a hardware device used to debug the software of an embedded system.
The basic idea of an "in-circuit emulator" is that it provides a window into the embedded system.

 In-circuit emulator 68HC11 Motorola
During the emulation, the CPU executes the program from the in-circuit emulator or from the target and not from the internal ROM.
When emulating the single chip mode, original ports B, C, F, G and H are used for the emulation and rebuilt by standard integrated circuits on the POD Therefore, electrical characteristics are changed.
Note that the emulator forces "breakpoint" instruction on the data bus when executing the code at the address where breakpoint is set.

 Beginner's Corner - In-Circuit-Emulators
The ICE’s emulation memory is high speed RAM inside of the emulator itself that maps logically in place of your system’s ROM.
In a sense the emulator is a bridge between your target and your PC, giving you both an interactive terminal peering deeply into the target, while providing a rich set of debugging resources.
Like all debuggers the emulator’s most fundamental resource is target access - the ability to examine and change the contents of registers, memory and I/O. However, since the ICE replaces the CPU it generally does not need working hardware to provide this capability.

 8051 In-Circuit Emulator
In-circuit emulator with 64 KBytes breakpoints, 64 KBytes internal code memory.
Therefore, when emulating an 8xC748 or 8xC750/1 with 87C752, the assembler or high-level language compiler must be set up so that the target chip is an 8xC752 to generate the file for the emulator.
The maximum frequency of this probe is related to emulation mode and it is 20MHz to 25MHz, although it may change according to the innovations of the microcontrollers and derivatives.

8051 Coding and Debugging - Testing in LARGE memory model
The debugging via an in-circuit emulator is done at C source level, so that the user will single-step C lines or trace lines of C and will basically only view the program in terms of the C source lines originally created using his text editor.
High-end in-circuit emulators also use dual-ported memory: the RAM mapped into the data space is dual-ported.
Some derivatives can be set into an emulation mode, where some pins are multiplexed and provide the in-circuit emulator with information about the internally accessed memory.

 Michael Barr's Embedded Systems Glossary - I
In-circuit emulators frequently incorporate a special bond-out version of the target processor that brings normally buried signals out of the chip to the ICE's logic circuits.
Emulators and microprocessors evolved concurrently for many years, CPU manufacturers often paying ICE vendors' NRE costs to build units for each new processor.
HISTORY: Intel invented the emulator in the mid-1970s with the first of their famous "blue boxes" for the 8080 microprocessor.

Z-World, Inc. / Rabbit Semiconductor Tech Bulletin Board: What does in-circuit emulator mean?
In-Circuit Emulators are relatively expensive hardware/software devices which allow you to "emulate" the operation of a target processor.
In other words, they are telling you that they have provided for the tools normally provided by an in-circuit emulator, and that there is no need for such.
in the user's manual of the rabbit 2000 processor i read in-circuit emulators are not needed and will be missed by the rabbit developers.what does the in-circuit emulator mean here?

A bondout emulator allow a few more things than a non-bondout and usually is a bit faster in the response to the keyboard (same response to a breakpoint).
