Inaccessible Pinnacle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Inaccessible Pinnacle is the 986 m summit of Sgurr Dearg (Gaelic for Red Mountain) in the Cuillin on the Isle of Skye, Scotland.
Because of its status as the most difficult of the Munros it has now spawned a cottage industry for the local guides who are frequently to be seen escorting parties of four—probably rock climbing for the first, and possibly the only time in their lives.
Unlike much of the Cuillin, the pinnacle is basalt not gabbro and thus is somewhat slippery in the wet.

Pinnacle - Psychology Central   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
A pinnacle (from Latin pinnaculum, a little feather, pinna, compare panache) is an architectural ornament originally forming the cap or crown of a buttress or small turret, but afterwards used on parapets at the corners of towers and in many other situations.
Some have stated that there were no pinnacles in the Romanesque style, but conical caps to circular buttresses, with finial terminations, are not uncommon in France at very early periods.
There are small pinnacles at the angles of the tower in the abbey of Saintes.

I was encouraged by this achievement as Little Chamonix was rated as “Very Difficult”, ie 2 grades higher than the planned route up the In Pinn, which was only a “Moderate” climb (at least according to Wilson Parker [15]).
I also discovered that the crest of the pinnacle was actually basalt - treacherously slippy when wet - and not the trusty Cuillin gabbro as expected; hence the concerns about wet and windy conditions.
Thankfully it was not too busy on top: a party of 4 sitting by the cairn debating which route to take, a party on the top of the In Pinn preparing to abseil off, 2 on the belay stance half-way up, and a single spectator at the foot of the east ridge.

However, the 'in-pin' [sic] had still to be added to his list of other Munros." He took in Sgurr Mhic Chonnich as well and was guided by George Yeomans who said he didn't know of anyone older having climbed the pinnacle.
