Incertae sedis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Incertae sedis—"of uncertain position (seat)"—is a term used to define a taxonomic group where its broader relationships are unknown or undefined.
If a formal phylogenetic analysis is conducted that does not include a certain taxon, the authors might choose to label the taxon incertae sedis instead of guessing as to its placement.
For example, if the phylogeny was constructed using soft tissue and vertebrae as principal characters and the taxon in question is only known from a single tooth, it would be necessary to label it incertae sedis.

Reworked dinoflagellate cysts, encountered in Pliocene sediments from the Antwerp area, were illustrated for (he first time in a regional pollen study by Hacquaert (1961).
Methods.-For each sample, 75 or 1OO grams of dry sediment were processed using hot 10 percent HCl, hot 38 percent HF, ultrasound treatment of the residue for 15 seconds, sieving on a 20 µm Nytal nylon screen, and staining with safranin-O. The residue was mounted on microscope slides using glycerine jelly.

 Sapayoa page
Perhaps the most intriguing of the Sibley and Monroe (1990) splits was their elevation of the Broad-billed Sapayoa Sapayoa aenigma to family level status as "Incertae Sedis" [latin for "we don't know where the hell it goes"....
The AOU (1998) simply list it as "Incertae Sedis" among the tyrannoids, without deciding where to place it.
I raise it to full family status at this time, primarily due to the work of the South American Checklist Committee (SACC), a distinguished coalition of museum and field ornithologists working in South America, under the chairmanship of J. Van Remsen, Jr., at Louisiana State University.

Move Coereba next to Tiaris olivacea
We already have an Incertae Sedis category in the 9-primaried oscines, so the way is paved.
This highlights the uncertainty, draws attention to the problem, and avoids a likely erroneous assignment of the group to Emberizidae (whatever that turns out to be).
I do hope that this becomes resolved before publication time; many users of the checklist will be more annoyed and confused with Incerta sedis than the incorrect placement in Emberizidae.

The group includes the heavily-built Megatherium (given its name great beast by Richard Owen) and Eremotherium.
Eremotherium eomigrans, which has been found in 2.2 million year-old sediments in Florida, reached a length of 6 meters and had the bulk of a bull elephant.
Other ground sloths, such Nothrotheres as the slighter built Hapalops and Nothrotheriops line, reached a length of about 1.2 meters, still larger than the living three-toed sloths that are their descendents.

For those, we provide a bibliography of pertinent literature necessary for the collection, preservation, processing, and identification of North American annelid species, and current publications discussing the current phylogenetic relationships of this group.
We hope that this document will indeed serve as a vehicle to identify taxonomic groups in need of systematic revision, to foster more interest in studying annelidan populations in poorly studied areas such as Alaska, the Arctic, and continental shelf sediments, and to encourage annelid experts to discuss and publish existing systematic and distributional data.
In September 1988, with the initial support of both the American Fisheries Society Committee on Scientific and Common Names of Aquatic Invertebrates (AFS-CNAI) and the North American Benthological Society Committee on Scientific and Common Names of Aquatic Invertebrates (NABS-CNAI), a subcommittee (the authors of this document) was formed.
