Korean War--The Inchon Invasion, September 1950
U.S. Marines had landed at the western port city of Inchon, near Seoul, and were poised to move inland to retake the capital and decisively cut the already tenuous North Korean supply lines.
Though strategically tempting, Inchon was a tactically challenging amphibious target, with long approaches through shallow channels, poor beaches and a tidal range that restricted landing operations to a few hours a day.
The Inchon waterfront is in the right center distance, with heavy smoke rising from pre-invasion bombardment.

 CNN.com - Inchon invasion a turning point in Korean War - September 14, 2000
INCHON, South Korea (CNN) -- On September 15, 1950, the United Nations-led invasion of the Yellow Sea port of Inchon turned the tide of the Korean War.
Meanwhile, the Inchon invasion, code-named Operation Chromite and considered one of the riskiest amphibious assaults in history, was being put together by Far East Commander and U.S. Army Gen. Douglas MacArthur.
Planners chose September 15 for the invasion because Inchon's notoriously tricky tides, which had a range of 33 feet (10 meters), would be at their highest then, allowing military vessels to carry the troops over the harbor's mud flats and close to shore.

MacArthur planned to use Inchon as a base to attack Seoul, and from there cut off supplies to the North Korean People's Army (NKPA), which was then assaulting Pusan.
This was a classic "pincer" move, intended to crush the North Koreans between the Eighth Army at Pusan and MacArthur's troops landing at Inchon, X Corps.
For one thing, Inchon's tides fluctuate wildly, and if the invasion was not timed perfectly, the area the X Corps planned to traverse by boat would be nothing but a mudflat.

 Inchon
The Inchon Invasion was first brought up in the early weeks of July 1950 when the UN position at the Pusan perimeter was desperate and looked unlikely to hold.
With Inchon chosen as the target due to the proximity of Seoul, the next problem was the 10 metre tidal range of the harbour and the date chosen was 15th September to correspond with a sufficiently high tide to get the Tank Landing Ships into shore, where they could unload theirarmour.
With the UN Forces assembled for the invasion, the diversionary attacks were wound down as air and naval support was directed against the area of Inchon to soften up the enemy in preparation for the landings.
