Bruce Springsteen's "Incident On 57th Street"
As a poet's vision, "57th Street" doesn't so much celebrate the grace and majesty of street fighting as the invigoration of vividly imagining how life must feel on the edge of love and violence and danger.
In "57th Street," in fact, he's deliriously happy simply to anoint himself their poet, to write and sing the words that prove how richly their story deserves telling.
Inseparable from the dreamy poetic wishing of "57th Street" is its immediate segue into "Rosalita," in which Bruce and band fulfill their vision and all the rock 'n' romance that have come before them, and the world is never quite the same again.

His chief musical lieutenant was keyboard player David Sancious, who lived on the E Street that gave the album and Springsteen's backup group its name.
The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle represented an astonishing advance even from the remarkable promise of Greetings; the unbanded three-song second side in particular was a flawless piece of music.
The truth is, The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle is one of the greatest albums in the history of rock & roll.

The Wild, the Innocent and the E Street Shuffle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Wild, the Innocent and the E Street Shuffle is the second album by Bruce Springsteen and the as-yet-unnamed E Street Band, it is described by All Music Guide as One of the greatest albums in the history of rock and roll.
"The E Street Shuffle" introduces a small group of characters including Power Thirteen and "his girl, Little Angel." The song describes the sordid characters of "E Street" (a reference to the name of Springsteen's band).
"Incident on 57th Street" is about "Spanish Johnny," who is "dressed just like dynamite" though he drives a "beat-up old Buick" and can't find a girlfriend.

The Wild, the Innocent and the E Street Shuffle
There is an occasional weak spot or an awkward transition, but for the most part it works spectacularly, and nowhere to more dramatic effect than on "Incident on 57th Street," the album's most stunning track, a virtual mini-opera about Johnny, a "romantic young boy" torn between Jane and the bright knives out on the street.
His chief musical lieutenant was keyboard player David Sancious (who lived on the E Street in Asbury Park that gave the album and Springsteen's backup group their names).
Sancious's piano work was the backbone of tracks like "Incident on 57th Street" and "New York City Serenade" (for which he also wrote a string chart).

The songs are longer, more ambitious, and more romantic; and yet, wonderfully, they lose little of the debut album's rollicking rush.
The album was very much a transitional work - Springsteen having got the clumsiness out of his system on his debut album.
'Incident on 57th Street' was a bona-fide rock'n'roll classic marked by its slow, stately progress.

The opening cut, "The E Street Shuffle," is a reflection of a community that was partly imagined and partly real.
It was the early '70s: blues, R and B, and soul were still heavily influential and heard often along the Jersey Shore.
"Incident on 57th Street" and "New York City Serenade" were my romantic stories of New York City, a place that had been my getaway from small-town New Jersey since I was sixteen.

Both visually and musically he stays in the background; his most notable bass parts may be on the song "Fire", "Backstreets" and the last verse of "Incident on 57th Street".
During the E Street Band's early years, he occasionally played the tuba on some of Springsteen's quirkier early songs, both in concert and on record (most notably "Wild Billy's Circus Story", from the album The Wild, The Innocent and the E Street Shuffle).
During the long time the E Street Band was inactive in the 1990s, Tallent moved to Nashville, having an affinity for country and western and rockabilly music.

The Wild The Innocent & The E-Street Shuffle
The album was viewed as transitional, allowing Springsteen to progress from the raw rollicking of "Greetings" to the more ordered and biographical "4th of July (Sandy)" and the classic "Incident on 57th Street".
He also chose that show to debut a new song, which was titled "Born to Run." The ex-Rolling Stone writer, rock critic and sometimes producer, Jon Landau watched the show and wrote an article that proved to be very prophetic.
His article, "Growing Young with Rock n Roll", appeared in Boston's "Real Paper" and described Springsteen as a "rock and roll punk, a Latin street poet, a ballet dancer, an actor, a joker"...

Marah and Amsterdam Live Show Reviews | Eight Track Mind
From just the title of "My Heart is the Bums on the Street" you known you're going to get something which at least attempts to ape Springsteen's early street-stories—"Incident on 57th Street," "New York City Serenade," and so on.
But this year came a welcome return to form with 20,000 Streets Under the Sky—a combination of pretty decent songs and that sort of light-touch rock which comes of intelligent use of acoustic and electric instruments in harness.
Amsterdam may have the advantage, in that by the time they recorded their official debut, they had been playing most of its songs live for some time.

Another note about "Incident" is that during the closing bars of the song a police siren can be heard, which is very fitting.

The most musically expansive record of his career, THE WILD, THE INNOCENT & THE E STREET SHUFFLE found Bruce beginning to find his own sound, moving beyond the Dylan-meets-Van Morrison folk-rock of his debut.
Though the signature Spector-on-steroids E Street Band sound wouldn't fall fully into place until the next album, this one sounds like a sudden realization of a universe of musical possibilities.

The heft of the E Street Band unleashes the sweaty, passion-charged preacher in him, but this solo acoustic "Devils and Dust" tour liberates the poet.

Springsteen might not be Hornsby-level on the ivories, but he's no slouch, either, evidenced on "Incident on 57th Street," a request played with a power unexpected from one man behind a piano.
