This action was in response to an arms embargo the U.S. Congress imposed on Turkey for using U.S.-supplied equipment during the invasion of Cyprus.
The 39th Air and Space Expeditionary Wing was activated at Incirlik AB on September 15, 1997, to support and command USAF assets deployed to Incirlik supporting ONW.
Incirlik served as a main hub of humanitarian airlift operations to Afghanistan, MC-130 special operations missions, KC-135 refueling missions and sustainment operations for deployed forces.

Incirlik is located in the southeastern part of Turkey, located only a few minutes east of Adana, Turkey's fourth largest city.
Many people stationed at Incirlik AB today were not even a glimmer in their mother’s eye in 1955.
Incirlik was instrumental in responding to crises in the Middle East.

In Northern Watch, restrictive rules of engagement are dictated by Turkey, which is the host nation because of the central importance of Incirlik.
Indeed, by far the most unpopular restrictions dictated by Turkey are their rules for responding to Iraqi fire.
Individuals at US Air Forces in Europe, which oversees USAF forces in ONW, maintain that Turkey's desire to avoid any move that might be interpreted as an escalation has also prompted Ankara to veto the requested deployment to Incirlik of U-2 reconnaissance airplanes and even the use of towed decoys to protect Western aircraft.

Pentagon planners have announced a request for more rights for the use of Incirlik AB, Turkey and intend to move the aircraft from Spangdahlem AB Germany.
Their reason as stated is to put these units closer to the Middle East to be better responsive.
Current agreement with Turkey is allowance of 48 jet fighters on Turkey's land for deployment.

 181st Fighter Wing
The first F-16Cs, block 25 machines arriving from Hahn AB, Germany, were used in the multi-purpose role up until the Summer of 1995, when the first block 30 F-16Cs began to arrive.
During one such deployment to Incirlik AB, Turkey, in support of Operation Northern Watch in 2002, the F-16s of the 181FW were involved in the destruction of several Iraqi SAM sites which had threatened coalition aircraft.
During their last deployment to Incirlik AB, Turkey, mere weeks before Operation Iraqi Freedom began in the spring of 2003, the 181st Fighter Wing was told they could not participate in OIF due to political problems encountered with the Turkish government, who were skittish about allowing US warplanes to launch combat missions from their soil.

The 102nd Fighter Wing deployed more than 300 personnel in early 1999 for six weeks to Incirlik AB, Turkey, as part of Operation Northern Watch, enforcing the northern no-fly zone over Iraq.
About 300 members of the Air National Guard's 102nd Fighter Wing were scheduled to deploy in late 2000 as part of Operation Southern Watch, enforcing the no-fly zone in southern Iraq.

Very nice pictures,I was there in 2003 for 4-5 months TDY.Of course I was on the OTHER side of the base in a HAS with my plane.Have they tore down Tent City yet?I kinda liked it there but shhhhhhh,don't let the guys I was over there with know that,they all thought it sucked.
I thought Incirlik was a pit the first time I went there.
We were supposed to relieve you in 2003 put they decided they needed us somewhere else.

 ONW Leaflets dropped over Iraq
UNITED STATES EUROPEAN COMMAND -- INCIRLIK AIR BASE, TURKEY -- For the first time, coalition aircraft enforcing the no-fly zone in northern Iraq dropped informational leaflets near Iraqi anti-aircraft-artillery batteries at approximately 8:45 a.m.
Based out of Incirlik AB, Turkey, Operation Northern Watch is conducted by a coalition of more than 1,400 U.S., United Kingdom and Turkish forces with more than 50 aircraft used to patrol the northern no-fly zone.
The previous leaflet drop was northeast of Mosul, March 1.

On 23 Feb 04, with A,B and C bags; weapon; and personal baggage in tow, I departed early from the Wichita Falls Municipal Airport.
Went on to Incirlik AB, Turkey, where we had a long delay, at least eight hours or so.
It’s a different story in the mountains and near the border with Pakistan, of course, but on Bagram, I felt very blessed with the situation I was in.
