The İncirlik Air Base, an important regional storage center in NATO's Southern Region is located in İncirlik, 12 km east of Adana, Turkey's fourth largest city, and 56 km from the Mediterranean Sea (37°00'N 35°26'E).
The 7440th was the air component of Joint Task Force Proven Force, which eventually controlled 140 aircraft and opened a northern front, forcing Iraq to split its defenses between the north and the south, where the main thrust of coalition attacks originated as part of "Desert Storm".
On March 12, 2004, the 39th Air Base Group deactivated, and the 39th Air Base Wing activated to provide the best mix of required support and, as new mission requirements emerge, to shoulder the burden and better contribute in the global war on terrorism.

Turkey's granting permission to use its Incirlik air base marks a sharp contrast to last year, when the country – opposed to the invasion to oust Saddam Hussein – refused to allow U.S. troops on its territory for the war against its southern neighbor.
In a sign of Incirlik's continued significance, the U.S. military recently started using the base to transport soldiers out of Iraq and "a large number" of troops were expected to pass through the base in the coming months, the U.S. official said Sunday, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Camps in Kuwait and air bases in Germany are also expected to be used in the rotation.

 Military Installation Guides 2.0
HISTORY: Roughly translated Incirlik means "fig orchard." Back in December 1950, the Turkish and US Air Forces began work on a large new air base near the city of Adana, Turkey on the northern Mediterranean coast.
Following the arrival of the 7216th Air Base Squadron's advance echelon late in 1954, the main contingent finally arrived at Adana Air Base from Wheelus Air Field in Libya in February 1955.
In view of Incirlik's growing importance in protecting NATO's front lines and its new central support role for all US units in Turkey, the 39th Tactical Group was redesigned and became the 39th Wing on 1 October 1993.

The Air Force originally wanted to use the base as an emergency staging and recovery site for medium and heavy bombers and the Turkish General Staff and U.S. Air Force signed a joint use agreement for it in 1954.
On Feb. 21, 1955, the base (originally named Adana Air Base) sported the 7216th Air Base Squadron as host U.S. unit, and changed the way the U.S. Air Force’s presence in Europe and Asia was viewed by other countries.
In 1958, the base was renamed “Incirlik” (meaning fig orchard) — the same year the Lebanon crisis occurred prompting the United States to order Tactical Air Command Composite Strike Force Bravo to deploy from America to Incirlik AB.

The base hosted, at its peak, the nearly 1,700 evacuees who had boarded the USS Trenton in Beirut on Sunday, sailed to the Turkish port city of Mersin, boarded 53 buses and then traveled to Incirlik.
When base officials learned Incirlik was designated to receive evacuees, the 39th Logistic Readiness Squadron transformed the base’s deployment processing center into an evacuee processing center, equipped to provide medical attention, a chaplain, and a play area for children, Capt. Cassandra Antwine, 39th LRS fuels flight commander, said in a news statement.
While base officials were prepared to accommodate roughly 3,000 evacuees, Jones said, they don’t anticipate receiving any more than the nearly 1,700 already processed.
