I will leave it to the more experienced collectors to place a date on the example sword, but I would think this hilt is more mid to late 18th century than early 17th century.
Incitatus I too would love to see photo's of your sword as this may narrow down the time period.

As far as it being too heavy,lets not forget about the 6 foot long great swords used in the 15-1600s,the ones intended for battle weighed in at about 10lbs,and the parade models were more like 15lbs.
The shape of this axe, while rather generic, reminds me of the style used by the Khonda people from the Orissa area of India.
