Sumner lies on the eastern part of the middle portion of Oxford County.
At Jackson Village (West Sumner post office) are a saw-mill for long lumber, a shingle-mill, grist-mill, cooperage, etc.; and at East Sumner are saw, shingle and grist-mills, and various small manufactures.
Among the earliest were Increase and Joseph Robinson, Simeon Barrett, Noah Bosworth, Hezekiah Stetson, John Briggs, John Crockett, Benjamin Heald, Mesech Keen, Barney Jackson and Oliver Cummings.

 Sumner Kimball
A young lawyer from Maine, Sumner I. Kimball was appointed as the chief of the Treasury Department's Revenue Marine Division in 1871.
In the case of the 'Metropolis' examination showed that the law had not provided the number of stations required for that coast, and that the assistance rendered by the life-saving crews was both heroic and considerable, and fully as efficient as the means provided by legislation allowed.
Kimball in his successive annual reports as the officer in charge of the service had seriously urged the necessity of increasing the number of stations in that section, and had in fact, predicted disaster as a consequence of their paucity, a prediction which the even verified.

 Increase Sumner
SUMNER, Increase, jurist, born in Roxbury, Massachusetts, 27 November, 1746; died there, 7 June, 1799.
His ancestor, William, emigrated from England to Dorchester, Massachusetts, about 1635, and his father, Increase, was a prosperous farmer and a select-man of Roxbury in 1753 and 1756.
He was one of the committee on the revision of the laws of the state in 1785, a delegate to the convention that adopted the constitution of the United States in 1789, and at the close of his judicial office was elected governor for three successive terms.
