The Incredible Bongo Band was formed by MGM A&R Michael Viner in 1972 to supplement the soundtrack to the virtually anonymous B film "The Thing With Two Heads".
Head straight for the IBB's take on 'Apache', which is a fantastic revamp of The Shadows classic track of the same title.
While most of the album is reminiscent of the 60's and 70's, several tracks are peppy bongo and drumbeat-fueled toe-tappers.

Viner recorded it under the name the Incredible Bongo Band with a revolving cast of studio musicians anchored by Viner and drummer Jim Gordon, formerly of Derek & the Dominos.
“Bongo Rock” was a remake of Preston Epps’ 1959 instrumental hit; Viner reconstructed it as a goofy funk number.
The Sugarhill Gang were the first group to utilize “Apache” as hip-hop source material, releasing their own “Apache” in 1981, where the interpolated break was replayed by the Sugarhill Records house band and the Chops horn section.

Disco - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Disco is an up-tempo style of dance music (generally between 110 and 136 beats per minute) that originated in the early-1970s, a derivative of funk and soul music, popular with audiences in larger cities all over the world.
It derives its name from the French word discothèque (meaning a nightclub where the featured entertainment was recorded music rather than an on-stage band), a portmanteau coined around 1941 from disc and bibliothèque (library) by La Discothèque, then located on the Rue de la Huchette street in Paris (Jones + Kantonen, 1999).
Disco music diverged from the rock of the 1960s, elevating music from the raw sound of 4-piece garage bands to refined music composed by producers who contracted local symphony and philharmonic orchestras and session musicians.

He introduced the song to them (stories vary how), and after the band returned to London, they recorded “Apache” in less than 45 minutes, expecting it to be a B-side.
Viner recorded it under the name the Incredible Bongo Band with a revolving cast of studio musicians anchored by Viner and drummer Jim Gordon, formerly of Derek and the Dominos, who later went on to kill his mother.
The song was never released as a single; after a second album in 1974, the Incredible Bongo Band—never really a band to begin with—was no more.

Among the most popular disco artists of the 1970s were Abba, The Bee Gees, Chic, Sister Sledge, Michael Jackson, Donna Summer, Gloria Gaynor, Boney M, The Village People, K.C. and the Sunshine Band, Voyage, Salsoul Orchestra, The Trammps, and Barry White.
However, many disco fans would agree that "for every chart hit pounded into the public's consciousness, fifty far superior tracks from all over the world were being played at some hard-to-find basement club" (Jones and Kantonen, 1999).
In the early 1980s, George Benson, Patrice Rushen, Brothers Johnson, Commodores, The S.O.S. Band, and many other artists created disco classics.

While yes this song may be covered quite a lot, the really famous "Apache" was down by the incredible bongo band which features a break that has probably been used 1000s of jungle, hip-hop, and DnB tracks for years.
And just for the record, the Micheal Viner's Inredible Bongo Band's version is the one that gets sampled over and over and is the only version that really matters (aside from the original that is).

 VH1.com : Cymande : Biography
Although underappreciated and woefully overlooked during their original tenure together, the fine early-'70s outfit Cymande (pronounced Sah-mahn-day) was one of the first to merge African rhythms with rock, funk, reggae, and soul.
The band issued a total of three releases: 1972's self-titled debut (which spawned one of their best-known songs, "The Message," peaking at number 22 on the domestic R&B charts in 1974), 1973's Second Time Around, and 1974's Promised Heights -- before splitting up.
But by the '90s, Cymande became the recipient of a strong cult following as another track from their debut, "Bra," was included on the soundtrack to Spike Lee's motion picture Crooklyn, and several of their songs were sampled by rap artists (including Raze, Master Ace, MC Solaar, De La Soul, DJ Kool, and the Fugees).

An absolutely mind-melting stormer from the king of the bongos, Preston Epps.
Epps hit it big in the late 50s with the tune "Bongo Rock" (which was covered to terrific effect by Michael Viner's Incredible Bongo Band in the early 70s).
This tune goes beyond the novelty aspect of the previous hit, though, into some crazy hyper-speed tempos and incredible breaks.

Historically, "jungle" records could mean old novelty-rock 45s capitalizing on the success of "Tarzan" movies and the 1950s obsession with the bongo drum.
"Bongo rock" came and went, but Latin soul (popularized by Mongo Santamaria) evolved into the conga funk of soul jazz.
Michael Viner's Incredible Bongo Band nailed the quintessential breakbeat ("Apache"), while Dennis Coffey's Detroit Guitar Band came up with the ultimate bongo-rock success, "Scorpio." England's Mandingo ground out a handful of albums of semi-exotic but mostly tedious drum rock.

The Dusty Groove folks were right on it when they described this instrumental funk outfit as fitting in a niche between The Meters and Booker T. and the MGs.

Some jazzy, spooky funk from the soundtrack to blaxploitation-horror flick "Blacula." Much of the music composed for genre films of this period was inversely proportional in sophistication to the films themselves; Page's elegant grooves are no exception.

Uppers | The Bongolian - S/T album (Blow Up Records BU025LP)
Following a critically acclaimed debut album, it is a little odd that the next thing we hear from them is not from them but a solo project from Nasser Bouzida, as The Bongolian rather than a second album from the full band.
Further, he also plays...bass guitar, bells, bongos, clavinet, congas, cowbell, drums, Farfisa, flute, guiro, guitar, organ, piano, synth, tambourine, timbales, vibes and (very occasional) vocals.
The album's brief liner notes clearly point out that "The Bongolian" was born out of Bouzida's interests in the percussive arts.
