Bird - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Birds are bipedal, warm-blooded, egg-laying vertebrates characterized primarily by feathers, forelimbs modified as wings, and hollow bones.
Birds respire by means of crosscurrent flow: the air flows at a 90 degree angle to the flow of blood in the lungs capillaries.
Birds possess a ventriculus, or gizzard, that is composed of four muscular bands that act to rotate and crush food by shifting the food from one area to the next within the gizzard.

 INCUBATE (BIRD) FACTS AND INFORMATION
The word incubate in the context of birds refers to the development of the chick (embryo) within the egg and the constant temperature required for the development of it over a specific period.
This in most species of bird is produced by body heat from the brooding parent, though several groups, notably the Megapodes, instead use geothermal heat or the heat generated from rotting vegetable material, effectively a giant compost heap.
Possibly the most common pattern is that the female does all the incubation, as in the Coscoroba_Swan and the Indian_Robin, or most of it, as is typical of falcons.

The Belize Zoo - The Birds Index
Birds are a group of animals that have a backbone similar to mammals and Reptiles.
Many birds also live in the upper canopy of the forest, making it a strain to be constantly looking upward.
But early morning and late afternoon are excellent times to bird watch, as most bird species are feeding or moving to new locations during these times.

Birds of Paradise   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
The Birds of Paradise are called "arena birds" because males establish carefully defined and tightly guarded territories called "leks" where they attract mates by dancing and displaying.
Although only a few of the Birds of Paradise are endangered, all species are carefully protected by the government of Papua, New Guinea and by the forest peoples who use the plumage in ceremonial costumes and body decorations.
Breeding efforts outside the birds' wild habitat are a precaution against future threats to the birds' survival.

 Metabolism and Thermoregulation
In birds and mammals the metabolic cost of maintaining endothermy is expensive, requiring at least 90% of total metabolism to be devoted to the regulation of body temperature.
In the wild a 25 gram bird has enough energy stores to last for perhaps two days, depending on environmental conditions, species of bird, etc. The resting metabolism and regulation of body heat are higher in winter than in summer and reproductive energy higher in the breeding season.
Birds vary enormously in their thermoregulatory abilities immediately after hatching and they have been classified according to these and other capabilities.

The advantage of the forced-air incubator is that it is easier to maintain humidity at a constant level because of air circulation.
The relative humidity in the incubator can also be varied by changing the size of the water pan or by putting a sponge in the pan to increase the evaporative surface.
During the hatching period, the humidity in the incubator may be increased by using an atomizer to spray a small amount of water into the ventilating holes.

When the target bird enters the small enclosure, the door can be manually closed from a somewhat remote location using a pull string.
In rare cases, large free-flight aviaries may successfully house groups of birds, but this is not ideal and usually will necessitate the removal of all but the dominant pair during breeding season.

incubating   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Allowing the hen to incubate her own eggs is the most natural method of incubation, and high hatches of excellent chicks can be the result if everything goes well.
Natural incubation is not the best method for everyone, though, because it requires a properly designed aviary and hen will stop laying eggs as soon as she develops a large enough clutch to start sitting on.
Putting pans of water in the incubator controls humidity and adjusting the surface area of the water to control the rate of evaporation or adjusting vents in the incubator to control the rate humidity escapes.
