The film was lost for many years, the original print of the film burned in a fire and all copies reported lost, destroyed, or worn away.
Incubus was the second feature-length Esperanto film ever made - the first, Angoroj (Esperanto for "Agonies") appeared in 1964, one year before Incubus.

The film has remained somewhat of a footnote for many years, largely because it was taken out of distribution when two of the actors died within a year of the film's release.
As bizarre as most of these tales of the Incubus curse are, and as fascinating and mysterious in retrospect as the film's story is, nothing could match the curse of the film itself, which over the years had literally disappeared—all extant copies of the film seemed to have vanished.
It was this lone print of the film that was eventually (after a surprising amount of legal wrangling and technical hurdles) loaned to the original producer for the purpose of restoration.

For my first super 8mm films I really wanted these elaborate 19th-century dresses made out of this weird flowered chintz that matched the wallpaper, because I was inspired by working in a photo studio in New York where we were making all of these sets for wallpaper catalogues.
Five years may seem like a long time to make two films, but you have to remember that I was making period wardrobes and sets from scratch, storyboarding everything, doing all of the editing and music, etc. I made those two films simultaneously, which was also hard.
Incubus was written as a short stage piece first, and I performed it at the Santa Monica Museum of Art.

Apparently those responsible for getting the film back into circulation did not feel that applying the digital "fix" necessary to remove the text boxes and restore the obscured frames was worth the effort.
For a film that was obviously "made on the cheap", this work has an abundance of artistic merit.

Hall (the cinematographer of “Incubus”), Rusty White of einsiders.com reminded me of the brilliant scene in “In Cold Blood” where Robert Blake’s character is filmed through a window pane where it appears that the rain drops on the window glass are tears on his face.
Certainly, the surreal nature of the film is heighten by the use of an artificial language, fl and white photography, and the Big Sur location.

The one other novelty the film offers is seeing a vision of occultic goings-on that was formed before Rosemary's Baby (1968) and The Exorcist (1973).
These later films tended to paint Satanism and the occult in terms of Catholicism and represent its manifestations in terms of physical obscenities and novelty shock effects.
The representation of evil is all rather laughably banal - the two temptresses never get up to much and the nastiest the film ever gets is the succubus brother's trying the marry the hero's innocent sister and force his way with her.

As Dr. Cordell discovers that the rapist-murderer is an incubus, a form of sexual demon known to mate with witches, the trail leads to Tim Galen, whose dreams seem to trigger the murders.
The film is as static as any film about a brutal murder spree could possibly be, it's acted just as badly by everybody else involved, it's ineptly edited, and it's spotted by the kind of dialogue howlers that would have made the film entertaining if there were any more of them.
