Incunabulum - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The origin of the word is the Latin incunabula for "swaddling clothes", used by extension for the infancy or early stages of something.
The first recorded use of incunabula as a printing term is in a pamphlet by Bernard von Mallinckrodt, De ortu et progressu artis typographicae ("Of the rise and progress of the typographic art"), published in Cologne in 1639, which includes the phrase prima typographicae incunabula, "the first infancy of printing".
Famous incunabula include the Gutenberg Bible of 1455, the Peregrinatio in terram sanctam of 1485, printed and illustrated by Erhard Reuwich, both from Mainz, and the Nuremberg Chronicle of Hartmann Schedel, printed by Anton Koberger in 1493.

Incunabula (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Incunabula, released by Warp Records in 1993, is the debut album by the electronic music group Autechre, and the seventh album in the Artificial Intelligence series.
Sean Booth and Rob Brown have claimed that Incunabula, rather than a deliberate attempt at an album, is actually a compilation made by Warp right after they were signed.
The album's title is a Latin word, the plural of incunabulum, the term used for printed books published prior to 1501, or more generally for something in its infancy or early stages or development.

If Incunabula saw Sean and Rob present their music as a series of jagged edged landscapes, Amber saw them smoothing out the edges and delivering an aural bit map every bit as contoured as the natural beauty of the beachhead that graced its' cover.
The linearity of their albums had always been counterbalanced by the more experimental edge of their singles, but this was Autechre at their most extreme: a singular journey into the hinterlands of brutal beauty; a trek no-one had made before.
The reaction to Autechre's third album, released in the smoking vapour trail of Anvil Vapre, in October, was unanimously ecstatic.

The album was into the Melody Maker Top 50 albums of the year, and, along with Richard D. James (Aphex Twin) were marked as the kings of a style that was labeled as “IDM“;.
The duo were keen to keep their on-stage gear to a bare minimum, relying instead on a bank of pre-programmed loops and their instinct, to push the music in whatever direction they choose by simply selecting from a certain area of a certain loop at the “right” time.
The album title purports to refer to the crossfader on a DJ panel or mixing desk, but the Oxford English Dictionary’s definition of “Chiasm” - the intersection of two tracts - cites as an example the two optic nerves of the brain.

In hindsight, *Incunabula* is perhaps Autechre's most shallow album; but `shallow' is a deceptive term, for the depths of even this birth-record cannot be fully grasped in the first, or even tenth, listen.
Most effectively, the overall soothing consistency of the album is punctured at strategic points, giving a whiplash snap to the ambient flow, such as the opening snarl of `Doctrine' after the aforementioned glide of `Eggshell', or the smarmy hip-hop parody of `Lowride' on the whispering tail of `Windwind's' devastating death-fugue.
Incunabula's music relies more on percussion and hip-hop beats, which is different but gives the album a sound that is actually rare.

If, then, the Parrish album portrays inmates of the Pennsylvania Training School, it was probably after the end of the Civil War in 1867, the date the population first approximated 150 inmates.
The subjects of his album are almost all children and it is not possible that they were inmates at his inebriate asylums in Media or Burlington.
It is again plausible that a photograph album was brought along to press the cause and it would have held an occupational photo of inmate cobblers because plans for North Hall included rooms for the asylum's burgeoning shoe repair service.

As the album wears on, the music gets away from largescale sweeping sounds to a more percussion and electronic effects heavy attack.
On a whole, the album is nearly a parallel aural vision of the sand cliffs of the cover.
Moreover, this is the sort of ambient oriented album that essentially requires an uninterrupted listen as it is not so much centered around song as it is around a sustained mood.

Early albums by Pink Floyd (such as Ummagumma and Meddle) and by the "kosmische music"-oriented krautrock artists, like Tangerine Dream, Popol Vuh, and Cluster have greatly influenced the genre.
One of the first albums in the genre, Wendy Carlos' Sonic Seasonings, combines sampled and synthesized nature sounds with ambient melodies and drones for a particularly relaxing effect.
Dark ambient is a general term for any kind of ambient music with a "dark" or dissonant feel, but often involves extensive use of digital reverb to create vast sonic spaces for frightening, bottom-heavy sounds such as deep drones, gloomy male chorus, echoing thunder, and distant artillery.

Incunabula was a compilation, really, of a lot of the older material that we'd had, most of which is either surface layer or which was around.
At the time, because Warp were putting out a lot more of the "home listening" stuff that we were doing, when we were doing it live we were playing in clubs -- nine out of ten of the bookings that we'd get were in clubs -- so we were doing club sets.
Originally Incunabula would have probably been half dance music, if we'd have been doing the compiling, but it was Warp, which is why it sounded the way it did.

Most of this album is enjoyable, but lacking in a little sparkle or enough distinctive sounds.
Often across this album it seems we have experimentation for the sake of it, almost as if Autechre are trying purposefully to remain marginalized, making sure they don't benefit at all from the attention of a few curious Radiohead fans, for example.

On their second album, Amber, Autechre create pristine yet somehow alien soundscapes which evoke in the listener a sense of calm, but at the same time, a traveling sensation, as if lifted off this plane of reality and into a new one.
Unlike their somewhat sophomoric debut album, Incunabula, Amber is mature and highly refined in both sound and structure.

Although Autechre's debut release doesn't totally display the full experimentation which would dominate their future albums and singles, it is still striking nonetheless, as proof that the early comparisons to fellow Sheffield denizens Cabaret Voltaire weren't just misguided hype.
From there Incunabula follows the same general tone; tracks often experiment with ghostly keyboard backing and mostly clinical beats combined with odd, individual touches.
Despite the relative sameness in the basic arrangements of tracks covering the better portion of the album -- a few song subtractions wouldn't have hurt the 75-minute length any -- Incunabula still stands out as a better effort than many other U.K. techno albums of the early '90s.

In eight years and nearly as many albums, Autechre have invented, and continue to invent, a totally new form of sonic constructions, far beyond the realm of music as we know it.
