 Ossicles
They are the incus, an anvil[?]-shaped bone, the malleus, a hammer-shaped bone, and the stapes, a stirrup-shaped bone.
The stapes articulates with the incus and is attached to the membrane of the fenestra ovalis, the elliptical or oval window or opening between the middle ear and the vestibule[?] of the inner ear.
The malleus then transmits the vibrations, via the incus, to the stapes, and so ultimately to the membrane of the fenestra ovalis, the opening to the vestibule of the inner ear.

Bracket 221 could also be implemented to secure incus 44, malleus 42, or stapes 46 in a configuration, where none of the auditory elements (incus, malleus, stapes) have been removed nor separated from each other, to effectively freeze the ossicular chain preventing transmission of sound along the chain.
In this latter configuration, incus 44 remains connected to stapes 46 (as shown in Figure 1) and bracket 221 is connected to malleus 42, incus 44, or stapes 46 with sufficient tension to freeze motion of the ossicular chain to establish a mechanical feedback barrier.
The cut through long process 68 of incus 44 is made so that a separation of at least about 2 to 3 millimeters is maintained between the ends of incus portions 242 and 240, accounting for a transducer thickness of about 0.5 millimeters mounted on the end of incus portion 240.

He then noted that in first attempting to put the wire loop of the prosthesis over the incus, the incus became subluxed, or dislocated, when the ligament supporting the incus was torn.
Defendants contend that continuing the surgery after subluxing the incus should not be viewed as the proximate cause of Knauerhaze's injury because it merely created the condition in which the injury could occur.
He testified that Dr. Allen was negligent in subluxing the incus because he did not initially size the wire loop of the prosthesis given the large size of the incus.

This long-overdue reissue of the Incus TAPS onto CD fills a major hole in the recorded catalogue of Derek's work and captures (now forever) a sadly under documented early period in the development of one of the most original, total reinventions of a major musical instrument of this century.
Indeed, it is quite a leap from the small, pointillistic "miniatures" heard on Derek's first solo record, Incus 2 (1971), (revolutionary as that record was and is), to the full-throttle tours de force of continuous invention unleashed here, two years later.
The unprecedented, shocking newness of Bailey's arsenal of rattling discourse had some writers for the local music press grasping for words to convey what was happening under the noses of glitter-rock obsessed London: "Derek Bailey is without doubt the most original guitarist I've ever heard...

This procedure involves removal of the diseased bone and cleansing of the affected area, after which a drain is inserted.
A chronically inflamed mastoid bone requires radical mastoidectomy - excision of the posterior wall of the ear canal, remnants of the tympanic membrane, and the malleus and incus (although these bones are usually destroyed by infection before surgery).
Radical mastoidectomy, which is seldom necessary because of antibiotic therapy, does not drastically affect the patient's hearing because significant hearing loss precedes surgery.
