Indalecio Prieto - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Indalecio Prieto Tuero (April 30, 1883 - February 11, 1962) was a Spanish politician, one of the leading figures of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) in the years before and during the Second Spanish Republic.
Fear of a repetition of the then-recent February Revolution in Russia (the October Revolution was still to come), the general strike was harshly put down by the military, and the members of the strike committee were arrested and detained in Madrid.
Having been involved in the organization of the strike, Prieto fled to France before he could be arrested; he did not return until April 1918, by which time he had been elected a deputy.

This was the start of his political conflict with Indalecio Prieto, who opposed all collaboration with the dictatorial regime.
He was Minister of Labor Relations between 1931 and 1933, in the first governments of the Second Spanish Republic, headed by Niceto Alcalá-Zamora, and in that of his successor Manuel Azaña.

In political circles, the Communists gained greater influence through the pressing need of their organizing ability, and at once used their power to insist on reviving the system of army commissaries over which they placed a Communist, Jesus Hernandez, as director of the system.
The most out-standing member of the Government for many months was Indalecio Prieto, who became minister of war.
A Centrist Socialist, Prieto strongly believes in the union of working-class parties of the Left and bourgeois Republicans and thinks that the emphasis of government in Spain should be on economic reform, and that violent revolutionary tactics can only result in anarchy.

In his report, Prieto paused to point out that because of the constitution, revolution was the only way to rid the nation of the institutions that had pushed it to the "brink of humiliation and ruin." But this verbal aggression did not disguise the fact that the Socialists were playing by the established rules.
