Sulu Governor Sakur Tan, in a long distance interview said M/V Arlahada with main port of call in Zamboanga City was illegally carrying passengers over its capacity when its sank more than two hours after it left the port of Jolo in Sulu.
Survivors of the sea tragedy recounted that the ship leaned on its side around 8:00 in the evening but the crew were not able to bring it back to its original sailing position prompting the sea waters to enter into all its cabins and other parts of the vessel.
The local crisis management committee composed of Sulu Governor Sakur Tan as its chairman with the Philippine Coast guard, the Philippine Navy, the Maritime police and the members of the Philippine National Red Cross in Jolo as members, are still continuing their search and rescue operations.

JOLO, Sulu-At least 44,000 residents in seven towns have been displaced by the ongoing military operations in the province, but relief and health workers have served less than half the number.
Sulu Gov. Abdusakur Tan said evacuation centers had been put up in the towns of Parang, Maimbung, Indanan, Talipao, Panamao, Luuk and Patikul.
He said it was the Sulu Provincial Peace and Order Council who last week directed all residents to secure police clearances and cedulas.

ZAMBOANGA CITY -- The military has poured in more troops to Indanan town in Sulu, site of the latest clash between soldiers and the Abu Sayyaf, to scour the town's hinterlands for remnants of a bandit group whose leader was reportedly wounded during the firefight.
A soldier was killed while eight others were wounded on the government side during the clash that took place around 9:30 a.m.
Government troops have widened their search in Indanan town as pursuit continues against the group of Parad and Hapilon, said Lucero.

The other group, which is reportedly hiding in Talipao, Sulu, is responsible for American hostage Jeffrey Schilling, Malaysian hostages Mohamad Noor Sulaiman, Joseph Jongkinoh and Ah Kai, and twelve Filipinos led by Jesus Miracle Crusade (JMC) founder Wilde Almeda.
