The Chairman of the Independence Party is Geir H. Haarde, Iceland's Prime Minister.
All the chairmen of the party have held the office of the Prime Minister of Iceland: Ólafur Thors, Bjarni Benediktsson, Jóhann Hafstein, Geir Hallgrímsson, Þorsteinn Pálsson, Davíð Oddsson and Geir H. Haarde.
Jón Þorláksson, the first chairman of the Independence party was Prime Minister for the Conservative party prior to the foundation of the Independence party.

Iceland is unique among the Nordic states (which lead the OECD countries on all indicators of gender equality) in that it is the only one to have a women's party, which has gained a foothold in parliament.
Then, on 29 August 1974, after gains by the Independence Party in June elections, a coalition of Independents and Progressives was sworn in under Geir Hallgrímsson of the Independence Party.
Following an election that December, a second coalition was eventually formed from members of the Independence Party, the People's Alliance, and the Progressives, with Gunnar Thoroddsen, deputy chairman of the Independence Party, as prime minister.

However, the Independence Party rejects the notion that it should be a desired goal to equalize people´s positions to such a degree that working hard becomes irrelevant and a person´s efforts towards developing his or her talents, in his or her own interests or those of others, count for nothing.

Three years later, the party was renamed the Liberal Left and in the 1971 elections, it drew 9% of the votes and 5 of the 60 seats in the Althingi.
This election saw a significant decline in the electoral support received by the Independence Party (although it still held the most seats in the Althingi), and a new coalition was formed, with the Independence Party the only party receiving seats but not in the government.
The Liberal Party was formed in 1998 and first contested the 1999 elections; it won four percent of the vote and two seats in the Althingi.
