Independence - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Independence is fully autonomous self-government of a nation or state by its residents and population, generally exercising sovereignty.
The term independence is used in contrast to subjugation, which refers to a region as a "territory" —subject to the political and military control of an external government.
The dates of established independence (or, to a lesser degree, the commencement of revolution), are typically celebrated as a national holiday known as an independence day.

Its first independence constitution, as elsewhere in Africa, was a symbolic representation of the end of colonialism and the installation of state sovereignty [Okoth-Ogendo ibid., Nolutshungu 1991, Romdhane 1991].
The independence documents, as we know, were more of a compromise between the colonial rulers and nationalist leaders rather than an embodiment of a compact between the new rulers and their people [Mwaikusa 1995, 59-64].
The Independence Constitution provided for a Governor General representing the Queen as the head of state; an executive prime minister from the majority party in parliament, a cabinet of ministers collectively and individually responsible to the parliament and an independent judiciary.

Due to these colonies' low economic output and the United Kingdom's fading imperial powers, independence was usually granted after little instigation, with the UK presiding over creation of the new state.
Generally local leaders were hand-picked by the UK to be the new governing body and were given a political education in London, during which they often served as the sole representative of their country in the negotiation of their country's new constitution.
Supporters applaud the UK's responsible transfer of power; critics cite low popular perceptions of legitimacy and claim that the independence constitutions mantained essentially colonial states.

When Christian Fredrik incited the Norwegians to fight for their independence, he was in no doubt that he enjoyed the support of large sectors of the population.
From these vague and confused dreams, there developed in Norway, during the winter and spring of 1814, a powerful and heady desire for independence: Norway was once again to join the ranks of independent states as a free, self-governing realm, as she had been many centuries earlier.
But the constitutional form of the Kingdom was in all main respects such as was laid down in the Constitution of 17 May, and the union with Sweden was so loose that it could be dissolved in 1905 without either kingdom being seriously affected as a result.
