This men's secret fraternal order was founded in the United States in 1842 as spin-off society of the English Independent Order of Rechabites, which was organized in 1835.
The order was a fraternal temperance society, modeled on the "Sons of Temperance." It utilized a six degree system for its members, and whose ritual were based on the Biblical story of David and Jonathan, of the legend of Damon and Pythias, and the medieval Knights Templars.
They claimed that their order was better than the Sons of Temperance in that they were not distracted from their primary purpose by offering insurance, and because it admitted women on an equal basis.

The International Order of Rechabites take their name form an eponymous biblical tribe who were 'commanded to drink no wine' by their leader Jonadab son of Recab, and successfully resisted when tempted to do so.
The Order bought whole-heartedly into the ethos of their Biblical namesakes and modelled their ritual, titles and structure along Biblical and tribal lines (as interpreted through the rituals of Freemasonry, with which many of the founders were familiar).
The Order was important because through membership the individual was part of a greater whole.

This name for their gatherings was figurative and not literal and comes from the Rechabites found in the book of Jeremiah, who abstained from wine and lived in tents.
There is however, one temperance order that is in existence still and that is The Independent order of Good Templars.

 Independent Order of Oddfellows
It grew to be the largest such society in the UK, though the Ancient Order of Foresters ran it a close second by the end of the 19th century.
By the end of the century there was a considerable overlap of membership between the upper ranks of the Oddfellows and the Freemasons (many of whom were non-Manx entrepreneurs in the Tourist or Service Industries).
A brief spat in the Manx press in November 1844 casts a somewhat darker picture of the first decade than is given by Kneale's rather anodyne history.
