The Independent Schools Council exists to promote and advocate high quality independent school education in the United Kingdom, its worth to individuals and its value to society.
ISC schools educate 80% of the 600,000 children in the British independent sector.

A public school (in the independent sense) usually teaches children from the ages of 11 (for girls) or 13 (for boys) to 18, and was traditionally a single-sex boarding school, although many now accept day pupils and are coeducational.
University College School, founded in 1830 as part of University College London, was unique in that it neither took boarders nor gave religious education; indeed, by not limiting its intake to a specific religious denomination, it gained the claim of being the first truly "public" school, open to all.

For schools in membership of the Independent Schools Council (ISC), inspections are carried out by the Independent Schools Inspectorate, which works closely with OFSTED and the Department for Education and Skills (DfES).
Schools not in membership of ISC are inspected by Her Majesty's Inspectorate (HMI) every six years.

In an extreme case, Summerhill, a school that allows children to decide whether or not to attend lessons, was severely criticised in an Ofsted report and the Government threatened to close it down.
Personally, I find it galling to spend a fortune in fees for an independent school only to find it is increasingly dominated by the state – the very organisation whose incompetence in education I am trying to get away from.

All schools are about to feel the impact of Australia's declining birthrate, which by 2008 will see student enrolments start falling and lead to greater competition between schools and school sectors.
The analysis by the Independent Schools Council of Australia showed the highest growth since 1996 was in low-fee Anglican schools, with annual enrolments growing by about 40% in NSW and Queensland since 2000.

The heads of hundreds of public schools, including Eton and Winchester, are planning to increase vetting as part of a new "kitemark" scheme designed to guarantee standards at boarding schools.
Schools that want to display the new safety mark on their promotional literature will also have to conform to a number of other rules.
Each school will also have to provide "independent listeners", such as a chaplain or a teacher's spouse, with whom pupils can discuss their troubles.

Their report, just published, said "we believe that the government should consider reviewing the charitable status of independent schools and hospitals with a view to considering whether the best long term solution might lie in those organisations ceasing to be charities but receiving favourable tax treatment in exchange for clear demonstration of quantified public benefits."
In a statement, the Independent Schools Council said there was overwhelming evidence of the public benefit provided by its member schools.
Schools were committed to working "as part of the nation's education system" and increasing their partnership with state schools and the wider community.

COBISEC was founded in 1981 as the Council of British Independent Schools in the European Communities and is a Charitable Association registered in The Hague.
COBISEC has always sought to admit only schools providing a high standard of education into membership.  The Annual General Meeting of the Association held in May 2000 voted in favour of all Members in Europe having an official British Inspection, or an inspection acceptable to the British Authorities, on a regular basis.
