Robert A. Baron, Digital Fever: A Scholar's Copyright Dilemma
Evidence of the unique status society bestows upon scholars and men in the arts and humanities may be had, ironically, in the tradition of ridicule and satire that Western culture sometimes uses to caricature scientists and humanists by placing them outside of the domain of the daily economy of living.
Today, the residue of the scholars' traditional persona manifests itself as a belief that there is a scholastic warrant freely to access and use resources germane to a chosen enterprise -- for this enterprise is not done for the benefit of self, but rather for the good of the discipline.
Scholars, especially those in the humanities, are being asked to plant their feet in two isolated worlds that cannot together coexist: one is in the past, the other, in the present.

Scholarly method - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Scholars value data that is directly connected to observation, for example, data taken from examining a composer's or author's manuscript, the proceedings of parliamentary debates, or diary entries.
To be sure, a scholar who can keep many facts in his or her head at once has a better chance of seizing upon an important new generalization, or of having a useful new idea.
Such scholars work at their own risk: they are often (though not always) considered to be cranks or to have lost the skill or knowledge needed to participate in scholarly debate.

Ralph Dumain: "The Autodidact Project": Review: "The Independent Scholar's Handbook" by Ronald Gross
I already have my own strong ideas about the contributions independent scholars can and are making in the humanities and social sciences in areas being neglected or mishandled by academics, but as I mentioned before, Gross's argument that independent scholars could make significant contributions in almost every field exceeds what even I thought possible.
I especially underestimated what independents could accomplish in the area of the natural sciences, which I had assumed was severely limited.
Much as I love the American independent democratic spirit that shines through this whole mission of independent scholarship, there are larger philosophical and sociological issues about the relation of the intellectual to society that do not enter into Gross's picture.
