 Frequency Multiplication
In a single-sideband transmitter (ssb), only one of the sidebands, the upper or the lower, is transmitted while the remaining sideband and the carrier are suppressed.
In ssb the carrier is suppressed (or eliminated) at the transmitter, and the sideband frequencies produced by the carrier are reduced to a minimum.
Independent sideband (isb) transmission is normally used to compensate for the deficiency.

Normally each sideband carries identical information, but ISB modulates two different input signals -- one on the upper sideband, the other on the lower sideband.
ISB is a type of hybrid between double sideband (DSB) and single sideband (SSB), the other is vestigial sideband (VSB).

Asymmetrical sideband transmission - Patent 4569073
(d) means for attenuating the modulation level of one sideband relative to that of the other sideband which the higher level fed to the substantially flat separate (c) means and the weaker modulating level fed to the (c) means having the higher frequency accentuation, the combined modulating levels sufficient to provide relatively full modulation.
(d) means for causing the ratio of the amplitude of the frequency components further from the carrier to the frequency components closest to the carrier of the weaker sideband to be greater than the ratio of the furthest to the closest components of the stronger sideband.
The reason this is desirable is that the fact that little or no pre-emphasis was imparted to the stronger sideband significantly reduces the harshness of the sound perceived when a listener detunes a radio receiver towards the stronger sideband.

However, the upper sideband remains at the output of this summation and at twice its original amplitude.
Thus the lower sideband appears on one channel and the upper sideband would appear on the other channel when applied to the input of a Stereo amplifier.

 Amplitude Modulation - Stereo AM
Each sideband is equal in bandwidth to that of the modulating signal and is a mirror image of the other.
Thus, most of the power output by an AM transmitter is effectively wasted: half the power is concentrated at the carrier frequency, which carries no useful information (beyond the fact that a signal is present); the remaining power is split between two identical sidebands, only one of which is needed.
Even greater efficiency is achieved—at the expense of increased transmitter and receiver complexity—by completely suppressing both the carrier and one of the sidebands.
