1964 Ramon Magsaysay Awardee for International Understanding - Welthy Honsinger Fisher
FISHER writes, "he combined mystic and intellectual, organizer and administrator, the seeker of inspiration and the practical man in his person." While he studied the East and sought a meeting of East and West, he did not neglect his mission and his church was filled.
FISHER turned the first clod of earth just to the right of the gate that was to bear in Hindi the words "Saksharta Niketan," and in English "Literacy House." A few weeks later she moved into the first interior room completed, which happened to be the ladies rest room furnished with only a commode.

The First Indian Author in English - Michael H. Fisher
Fisher carefully situates Mahomed within the broader historical context, and his explanation of the structure and composition of the Bengal army of the eighteenth century is particularly lucid and comprehensive.
Fisher manages to explain almost all aspects that related to Dean Mahomed's life, and much of it is fascinating.
Fisher's book is an altogether remarkable achievement, and should appeal to all interested in either the Indian or the British worlds around 1800.

The Travels of Dean Mahomet - Dean Mahomed (ed. Michael H. Fisher)
The Oxford University Press edition provides more detailed commentary, and so the focus of that review is Fisher's contribution, while the focus of this review (of the University of California edition) is on Dean Mahomed's actual text.
Dean Mahomed came to no harm, and most of the thieving villagers were captured (and punished by having their ears and noses chopped off), but the army certainly did not make as great an impression on the locals as they might have hoped.
It is, however, Michael H. Fisher's excellent accompanying account (a more extensive version of which can be found in The First Indian Author in English (see our review)) that truly makes the book invaluable.

Anne Arundel County records show that for many years Mary Fisher "was unjustly detained" as a slave, first by Thomas Beale, and, after his death, by his son John Beale, and that during this time she married Richard Fisher, an African American slave.

Furthermore, the children of Mary Fisher "are all hindered of their liberty and are kept as slaves," stated the freedom petition.
On May 26, 1783, Ann Fisher´s daughter, Eleanor Toogood, sued for her freedom by reason of her descent from a "free white woman" and won her case.
