By July/August 2004, all venues were delivered: in August, the Olympic Stadium was officially completed and opened, joined or preceded by the official completion and openings of other venues within the Athens Olympic Sports Complex (OAKA), and the sports complexes in Faliro and Helliniko.
The well-received 2004 Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony was held on August 13.

The International Olympic Committee is reviewing the merits of all 28 current Olympic sports and disciplines following the Athens Games and has decided also to assess golf, rugby, squash, karate and roller sports.
The IOC earlier this year drew up a list of 33 criteria on which Olympic sports would be assessed, ranging from the history and development of the sport to gender equity and the impact on the environment of staging the sport.
Golf and rugby union have appeared in the Olympics before but roller sports, karate and squash would be making their debut if included on the programme in 2012.

Having said that India is one of the most culturally wealthy nations on the planet, in 12 to 16 years I'm sure they will be a formidable opponent for other cities.
India has also has to invest more in sport - they are one of the constant under achievers in the Olympics, however, many would have said the same about China a decade ago and I'm sure we will see a similar growth in India.
