The 1st and 8th Battalions landed in Normandy in June 1944 and fought their way through France, Belgium and Holland to end the war in the vicinity of Hamburg, with the 1st Battalion being with the 7th Armoured Division.
It briefly served with 7th Armoured Division during the Gazala battles in 1942, with 7th Motor Brigade, where as part of the Garrison of the Retma Box it was overrun.
With the rest of the Brigade and Division it arrived in North Africa in mid 1942 and took part in the Battle of Alam Halfa before joining 7th Armoured Division for the battle of El Alamein.

When the 1st Armoured Brigade arrived at the Battle of Gazala in May 1942, the brigade was dissolved and their equipment and troops used to reinforce the other units and was never reformed.
The 22nd Armoured Brigade arrived in the Desert in October 1941, and were given to the 7th Armoured Division.

The 1st RTR of the 22nd Armoured Brigade did encounter a rearguard at Agedabia and the battle took the form of a duel between the British Tanks and artillery and the enemy anti-tank guns, which were well concealed in an arc across the road.

The Indian commander decided not to outflank the Pakistani's in front because of three reasons i.e (1) that his four tank regiments were opposed by two tank regiments (2) no news of his left flank protection force (3) that his rear was under attack.
Pakistan's 1st Armoured Division with five tank regiments and additional two supporting tank regiments on the flanks failed to breakthrough the Khem Karan area on 7th and 8th September at a time when only one Indian tank regiment with ancient Sherman tanks was opposing the Pakistani five tank regiments having most modern Patton Tanks.
This was a case of the Indian brigade commander losing his nerve because of timidity and irresolution and the Indian GOC not spurring his brigade commander and instead withdrawing to the rear for the next two days while only one tank regiment opposed his division.
