  History of the 2nd Infantry Division
The 2nd Infantry Division was activated on Oct. 26, 1917, in Beaumont, France.
At the time of its activation, the Indian head Division was composed of one brigade of U.S. Infantry, one brigade of U.S. Marines, one brigade of artillery and various supporting units.
Initially employed piecemeal, the entire division was committed to relieve the 24th Infantry Division at the Naktong River Line on Aug. 24, 1950.

In December 1940 the division was rushed to the British Sudan to join with the Indian 5th Infantry Division), to prevent the numerically vastly superior Italian forces (10 Divisions in total) from threatening Red Sea supply routes to Egypt as well as Egypt and the Suez Canal itself from the South.
The rest of the Division was heavily involved in the fighting which ebbed and flowed past Tobruk from June 1941 onwards, having been rejoined by 5 Brigade, returning from Syria, in the autumn of 1941.
The Division had a relatively subsidiary role in the battle, holding in stiff fighting, as a diversionary tactic, the Ruweisat Ridge which was at the centre of the Allied front whilst the breakthrough was planned further North.

 25th Infantry Division Association: The Units
The 2nd Battalion (Airborne) 503rd Infantry Regiment was reactivated on 16 December 2001 as a parachute infantry battalion and assigned to the 173rd Airborne Brigade stationed at Vicenza, Italy.
The 66th Infantry Platoon (Combat Tracker) was activated on 15 February 1968 and served with the 25th Infantry Division until inactivated in Vietnam on 15 March 1971 with the departure of the 2nd Brigade.
On 16 October 1989 the 1st Battalion was reactivated as a parachute infantry battalion and assigned to the 6th Infantry Division with station at Fort Richardson, Alaska On 16 April 1998 the 1st Battalion was reassigned to the 172nd Infantry Brigade.

The 2nd Infantry Division drew its first blood in the nightmare landscape of Belleau-Wood and contributed to shattering the four-year-old stalemate on the battlefield during the Chateau-Thierry campaign that followed.
Finally, on 9 April 1953, the Division was moved to a rear area and on 20 August 1954, four years after its last unit arrived in Korea, the 2nd Infantry Division was alerted for redeployment to the United States.

The Distinctive Insignia of the 22nd Infantry is the shield from the Regimental Coat-of-Arms.
The five arrows represent the five campaigns of the Indian Wars of the 19th century in which the Regiment served.

They were used in the regiment's operations in October 1918, in the Chufilly-Chardeny zone, transmitting in their native tongue a variety of open voice messages, relating to unit movements, which the enemy, who was completely surprised in the action, obviously could not break.
And in Europe, the 4th Signal Company of the Army's 4th Infantry Division was assigned 16 Comanches for employment as voice radio operators to transmit and receive messages in their own unwritten language.
The success of the experiment in using Indian code talkers is attested to in the reports of military units and commanders in the several services.

Foster was a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. in 1941.
His first assignment was as a platoon leader in the 4th Signal Company, 4th Infantry Division at Fort Benning, Ga. It was during this assignment Foster trained 17 Comanche code talkers months before the tactic was used by the Marine Corps in the Pacific Theatre.
Foster III said that when the Comanche code talkers were recognized in 1999 they insisted that his father was included.
