Chagos Archipelago - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Chagos Archipelago is a group of seven atolls with more than 60 individual tropical islands in the Indian Ocean, that lies about 500 km (300 miles) due south of the Maldives in the Indian Ocean, and 1600 km (1000 miles) southwest of India, halfway between Africa and Indonesia.
They are part of the British Indian Ocean Territory and were home to the Ilois until their expulsion in the 1960s.
The archipelago consists of seven atoll formations of all sizes which have islands or cays permanently over water, including the largest atoll structure of the world, the Great Chagos bank with a total area (mostly water) of 13,000 km².

USATODAY.com - Remote Indian islands remain closed to tsunami aid   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
PORT BLAIR, India (AP) — Fighting to survive without water or food since the tsunami, villagers on a remote southern Indian archipelago forbidden to outsiders are starving and desperate for humanitarian aid, survivors and officials said Friday.
Indian authorities have traditionally barred foreigners from most of the islands — partly for security reasons because of an Indian air force base in Car Nicobar and also to protect a dwindling group of indigenous people.
Relief operations on the remote archipelago — which starts approximately 300 miles northwest of the quake's epicenter — have been limited to Indian officials and local volunteers who have struggled to deliver tons of rations, clothes, bed sheets, oil, and other items, hampered by lack of transportation to the remote islands.

On the Physical Geography of the Malay Archipelago, by Alfred Russel Wallace
The Malay or Indian Archipelago is that extensive group of islands which occupies the space between south-eastern Asia and Australia, and divides the Indian from the Pacific Ocean.
Placed immediately upon the Equator, and surrounded by extensive oceans, it is not surprising that the various islands of the Archipelago should be almost always clothed with a forest vegetation from the level of the sea to the summits of the loftiest mountains.
Speaking generally, the whole south-western part of the Archipelago, including the whole range of islands from Sumatra to Timor, with the larger half of Borneo and the southern peninsula of Celebes, have a dry season from April to November, with the south-east monsoon.

 Editorial Vol 1 No 1
It was recognised that the subtle nuances of art and expressive writing coming from distinctive racial strands in the West Indian archipelago were either lost or neglected in what is broadly deemed "mainstream" criticism.
We recognise that other islands of the West Indian archipelago share similar concerns and, also, that a significant portion of the populations of Guyana and the wider Caribbean continue to live, work and produce art in foreign countries; some of the finest works of art have sprung out of exile and displacement.
Perhaps due to a combination of Indian militancy and the humane approach of Governor Henry Turner Irving (1882-1887), several reforms were introduced; among the chief victories were: an innovative land settlement scheme, a more reliable system of interpretation in the Courts, and registration of indentured marriages.

Oceanic Mythology: Part III. Indonesia: Chapter IV. Summary
For the bulk of the myth material from the Archipelago, exclusive of this more specifically Indonesian portion, the questions of greatest importance are (1) the extent to which it has been influenced by Indian and (2) by Islamic culture.
The earliest period of Indian contact was one in which Buddhist influence was paramount, and perhaps the clearest evidence of its effect is seen in the Trickster Tales, a large portion of which appear in the Jâtakas and other early Indian sources.
When from the whole mass of the mythology of the Archipelago we have eliminated everything that may with any show of probability be regarded as due either to Indian or Islamic contact, direct or indirect, there still remains a large body of material which must be regarded as native.
