The Indian Blue Robin (Luscinia brunnea) is a small passerine bird that was formerly classed as a member of the thrush family Turdidae, but is now more generally considered to be an Old World flycatcher, Muscicapidae.
This species can usually be seen at wintering sites such as Victoria Park in Nuwara Eliya, skulking low in vegetation.
The Indian Blue Robin is similar in size to the Bluethroat at 15cm long.

Indian Pitta seem to be common and I had good views of two along the access road, as well as seeing several more fly across the road.
The highlight here was a male Indian Blue Robin which perched at close focus range and repeatedly sang, belying his supposedly shy nature.
I picked up a pair of Dull Blue Flycatchers here, as well as a pair of Nilgiri Blackbirds eating fruit in a tree (they looked different to the European version, and were much more shy, but the quiet "chuck-chuck" call sounded familiar).

Indian Swiftlets flew overhead and Greenish Warblers seemed to be everywhere.
There were parties of Blue Peafowl, Grey Junglefowl, a group of twelve Crested Treeswifts in a tree with many more flying around, Golden and Black-hooded Orioles, Brown-capped Pygmy and Yellow-crowned Woodpeckers, Yellow-footed Green Pigeon,White-bellied Drongo, Bay-backed and Brown Shrikes, Jerdon's Bushlark, White-browed Bulbul, Common Woodshrike,Blue-winged Leafbird and Chestnut-shouldered Petronia.

In the event we were lucky with the room although not with the bittern and the snipe.
Many Indian Pond Herons and other birds would feed in the pools and a Lesser Spotted Eagle perched in the small single tree in the field on the RHS of the picture!
The room was large (it held the three of us comfortably) though bleak, the food was good though this is not important in Baga as there are dozens of excellent eating places all round, the staff pleasant and helpful.

Other birds seen well from the logging track included several splendid Golden Bush Robins, a White-capped Redstart, plenty of Large-billed, Chinese Leaf and Greenish Warblers, three Lemon-rumped, lots of Golden Spectacled Warblers (this was in pre-split days) and a couple of Collared Yuhinas.
Indian Blue Robin called from deep cover, but refused to sit up and be counted.
We stopped for lunch at the end of the logging road and headed up a slope of moss-covered scree interspersed with stands of bamboo and large (probably primary) trees.

 Bird watching Trip Report from Sri Lanka
Mammals include Indian Elephant with which we had an unplanned encounter while spotlighting nightjars and SL Swamp Crocodile with which we had a planned but still surprisingly close view in it’s hole in the river bank.
The approach road to the park produced good views of Indian and Jerdon’s Nightjars but we were unable to do the park justice as it poured with rain for most of the day.
Good views of Indian Pitta, Kashmir Flycatcher, Yellow-eared Bulbul and Blyth’s Reed Warbler but no luck with Indian Blue Robin or Pied Thrush (which we were told had not yet arrived).

The grounds are a regular haunt of Brown Fish Owl, Pied Kingfisher, Streaked Weaver, Common Woodshrike and Indian Robin.

After dinner at a local house, we lost a tape duel with a pair of Spot-bellied Eagle-Owl and were devastated to hear from the more experienced guide, Eldo, that we had missed a day-roosting Bay Owl on the previous day.
Victoria Park holds Indian Pitta, Pied Thrush, Kashmir Flycatcher, Indian Blue Robin, Ceylon White-eye and Slaty-legged Crake.
Indian Pitta, Pitta brachyura – 1 at Sinharaja, 3 at Udawalawe and 1 at Victoria Park, Nuwara Eliya – seems to be the world’s easiest pitta, though I haven’t looked for the Australian ones at the right time.

As we soon discovered even urban areas produced good birds - a stunning male Indian Blue Robin and a male Pied Thrush were found in a town park at Nuwara Eliya.
Any lack of facilities was, however, fully compensated by birding in the largest tract of surviving rainforest in the country.
It is not often that a group records virtually every species that they hoped to see on a trip, but with a record count of 255 birds for a two week tour, including all 24 endemic species, it is hard to think of anything that was missed.

The electric blue of the rollers' wings really shone out against the dark clouds that were looming overhead.
At the far end of the lagoon, which is cut off from the Indian Ocean by a small spit of sandy beach, we came upon a large group of roosting terns.
A brief male Indian Blue Robin was seen by a few in the group and was much appreciated.

The light was poor and we were initially dodging the drizzle but it was worthwhile with new waterbirds including White-breasted Waterhen, Purple (Indian) Swamphen and Lesser Whistling-duck while the distinctive local race of Red-rumped Swallow showed why it is a likely candidate for re-splitting into Sri Lanka Swallow with it's totally rufous underparts.
Undoubtedly the best birds here were a pair of Indian Scimitar-babblers which noisily investigated us for 10 minutes, a rare treat for a species which is normally extremely secretive.
Pied Cuckoo and Eurasian Hoopoe were seen well but the same could not be said for the Asian Elephants which trumpeted in the bush but refused to show anything more than various small parts of their anatomy (mainly tail and backside!).

Don't be put off by the grubby kitchen at the lodge, you are unlikely to taste Indian food better than this!
