Indian Institutes of Technology - Biocrawler
Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are the premier educational institutions for science and technology established by the Government of India.
A student/alumnus of the Indian Institutes of Technology is informally known as an IITian.
In early 2004, the IITs and the IIMs were struck in a controversy with the then ruling BJP government branding them as elitist, as people from poorer areas of the country found it harder to gain entrance.

Indian research institutes face tough times
A growing crisis in academic recruitment at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) is threatening to disrupt teaching and research, and could put international collaborations in jeopardy.
Most of the IITs were founded in the 1950s and 1960s, in a wave of post-independence enthusiasm for science and engineering.
Faculty positions in IITs are currently restricted to Indian nationals, and IIT directors are now asking the government to change that rule.

Dalits at the Indian Institutes of Technology
Technically, the IITs want to show that they are indeed satisfying the dalit/adivasi need to be part of what is an elite setup at the student level, but in effect they are producing (dalit and adivasi) technologists and engineers who will not be recruited by these very institutions.
In all likeliness, since the very basis of technology in these institutions is brahmanical and pseudoscientific, even those few dalits who make it to these places, in the process of surviving and emerging successfully out of them, are likely to imbibe/adopt values which would alienate them from their own backgrounds.
IITs embody a hazardous combination of the worst of western capitalist-driven technology's social insensitivity and the worst of the local caste system - the only aspect of post-Aryan culture that has survived, in one form or the other, for 3000-odd years.
