The fourth Missouri (BB‑63), the last battleship completed by the United States, was laid down 6 January 1941 by New York Naval Shipyard; launched 29 January 1944; sponsored by Miss Margaret Truman, daughter of then Senator from Missouri Harry S Truman, later President; and commissioned 11 June 1944, Capt. William M. Callaghan in command.
Missouri joined the fast battleships of TF 58 in bombarding the southeast coast of Okinawa 24 March, an action intended to draw enemy strength from the west coast beaches that would be the actual site of invasion landings.
Missouri transferred a landing party of 200 officers and men to battleship Iowa for temporary duty with the initial occupation force for Tokyo 21 August.

According to tradition, the Missouri, Iowa, and Oto separated from the Winnebago at some indefinite period in the past and moved southwest to Iowa River where the Iowa remained, the others continuing to the Missouri, which they reached at the mouth of Grand River.
Historically the Missouri tribe itself is remembered particularly for the tragic manner in which it was almost destroyed, but, as in many other cases, its name has attained a distinction out of all proportion to the aboriginal standing of the people.

In 1855, the Blackfoot Indians were assigned a territory north of the Missouri River which extended east from the Rocky Mountains to an area that would become the western boundaries of the Fort Peck Reservation.
Later the Sioux Indians began a migration into Montana Territory as political exiles from the Minnesota wars of 1862 and other bands moved into the area which was prime buffalo country.
In 1886 at the Fort Peck Agency in Poplar and in Wolf Point, Montana, the Sioux and the Assiniboine Tribes exercised their sovereign powers and agreed with the United States government to the creation of the Fort Peck Indian Reservation.

I undertook my small trip to the Missouri not so much to replicate coincidentally Lewis and Clark's journey, but instead to record the places and ways that the river has in fact been bridged, and capture artistic photos along the drive.
Then I realized: Lewis and Clark traveled up this portion of the Missouri in the year 1804 (Rte 1806 lay on the west bank of the river, which was the year they returned down the Missouri).
One additional bridge spans the Missouri within North Dakota: that near Buford and the Montana border, just beyond the juncture of the Missouri and the Yellowstone River, at the end of Rte 1804.

If you were going for tourist season, Indian Point is very close to Silver Dollar City, yet far enough away to be private.
