KOZHIKODE: Two of the Indian Pond Heron fledglings rescued by the Flying Squad Wing of the Forest Department from the tamarind tree that was felled for widening the road near Eranhipalam Junction here have been released into the Kadalundi estuary after they took wing.
Forester T.V. Rajan said the flying squad had rescued six fledglings from the nests that had crashed to the ground when the tree was cut down by the contractor engaged by the Public Works Department to widen the road.
Of the six birds rescued, one was a cormorant (`neerkaka') and five Indian Pond Herons.

We surveyed reptiles and amphibians in a core area (Wildcat Bluff/Heron Pond) and at four sites along the Cache River in southern Illinois, USA, to assess whether the existing riparian zone would serve as a dispersal corridor for these species.
Only 14 of the 37 species found in the core area were detected at all sites along the river, and 17 species were not found at the three sites furthest downriver from the core area.
Of the species considered, Little Cormorant, Night Heron, Pond Heron, Cattle Egret and Little Egret were the most common nesting species in the heronries.

A small heron which cannot be easily separated from Indian Pond Heron unless in breeding plumage, when largely golden-buff with long, streaked plumes on hind-neck.
Winter adults and juveniles are streaked buffish brown and lack the neck plumes; in this camouflaged plumage they are difficult to see as they creep quietly along the edge of a wetland.
Status and distribution: An uncommon passage migrant and winter visitor, which is probably often confused with Indian Pond Heron Ardeola grayii.

The Indian Pond Heron was first described, in the 1832 edition of "The Proceedings of the Zoological Society", by Colonel W. H Sykes, who named it in honour of Gray.
Its habitat is usually freshwater, sometimes brackish, lagoons or on coastal mudflats, but it can also be seen on almost any kind of freshwater from small stagnant pools to large lakes, often close to human habitation.

The first birds seen were Great Egret, a nice close Rufous Treepie, parties of Jungle Babblers ('seven sisters' to the rickshaw drivers because of the bird's tendency to stay in groups of six to seven birds).
Various short stops added plenty of Indian Darters, both on tree branches and swimming with their necks only showing.
Birds just kept appearing with Indian Robin in a tree by the side of the road, Purple Herons, Grey Herons and Indian Cormorants in the marshes, a Brown Crake in a dryish spot, Black-winged Stilt, Cattle Egrets, a single White-breasted Waterhen and a Greater Spotted Eagle overhead.
