 Joseph Brant (Thayendanegea), Mohawk
Brant was born in 1742 on the banks of the Ohio River and given the Indian name of Thayendanegea, meaning "he places two bets." He inherited the status of Mohawk chief from his father.
The Indians felt that the land was for the use of everyone and so initially saw no reason to not welcome the Europeans.
He retained his commission in the British Army and was awarded a grant of land on the Grand River in Ontario by Govenor Sir Frederick Haldimand of Canada in 1784.

The French River area was reported to have originally flowed eastward from the present day Georgian Bay to the Ottawa River Valley drainage system southeast to the ocean from 12,000 – 9500 years ago as per S.B. Lumbers, curator-in-charge, Department of Geology, Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto.
However, the River is best known for providing world class fishing opportunities for a large variety of fresh water fish from muskie, bass, pike, walleye, sturgeon, catfish, crappies, perch and other pan fish.

Nault, met with Grassy Narrows First Nation officials in Ottawa, and agreed to provide funding (approximately $8,900) to support a retreat held in Winnipeg, Manitoba on January 14-16, 2004 to discuss the Board's work and mandate.

The Area of Concern extends from the head of the river at Whitefish Bay (Point Iroquois - Gros Cap), downstream through the St. Joseph Channel to Humburg Point on the Ontario side, and to the straits of Detour on the Michigan side.
